anybody got any recommendations for snow / winter tyres ?

after being stuck on the numerous times in the last few days because of the snow ,
I have worked out that the ( insert swearword) passat is rubbish on contis if there is more than mere hint of ice or snow

I have got a spare pair of steel wheels to fit them on.

Try www.mytyres.com as they do both winter and summer tyres. Normally there is a item report with each tyre selection (rating) that may help you to select the ones you need.

The germans (dont mention the war) always use summer and winter tyres accordingly and certainly do not have as many problems as we do in this country. Probably the main reason in this country that we do not do the same is down to cost and if you don't have a garage where do you put your winter wheels.

Its a sensible thing to do especially if you have decent alloys then they will not suffer the ravages of all the salt (when they have some) they get covered in over the winter.

Will be doing the same myself this year as i'm fed up of trying to ice skate with my car.
If it ain't broke leave it alone!!!

It depends on what you want them for.

If you get ones with a snowflake symbol (and usually M&S mud&snow) if they are just for temporary use on spare wheels, these will give the best performance, but if you also do a lot of motorway driving in between snowy days, they may be less suitable.

What sort of weather are you experiencing? ie do you live in Scottish highlands where there is more snow and hills, or just want to change to a tyre that gives better grip at low temperatures and the odd flurry of snow?

Unfortunately for me i use a lot of B roads especially through the Ashdown forrest and after seeing the carnage this week black ice, cars thru fence gates, in bushes and on their roof it does make sense for me.

This weather maybe a one off (we can hope) but a sensible choice in tyres could make all the difference.

I lived in Germany for over 3 years knew quite a few of the locals, and no we did not live in the mountains and the majority and not the minority did change their wheel and tyres over during the winter months.

I see where you are coming from with regards to say motorway driving but it maybe only an increase in road noise which most people could put up with.

I live in a cotswold village , quite high up so when the snow and ice come it hits hard .
my other car is a landrover so that gets used as joint transport when its really grim,
but I'm surprised how bad the passat is on a little snow ( so is my sons golf for that matter) , I'm hoping its just down to the tyres as both cars are on contis
