Hi, My first post to the forum. Ive really enjoyed reading your posts.

I bought my audi last year for just over 1500. So far Ive really enjoyed it. I work in London so only drive at weekends and I have to say I really like it. Must say Ive spent some cash on it. Since Ive had it Ive had..

    New brake calipers (rear)
    1 brake hose
    Disks and Brakes all round
    Cam & fan belt kit
    Full service
    New Tyres

The car has 168,000 on the clock, however my annual milage is low. I would love to hear any advice on what other things to watch out for, common problems etc.

Also, can someone explain what the "red i" means. Someone sold me it means something but he didnt know what? or did he dream it?

    cheers

    Matt

    Hi Matt,

As far as I know the 'i' just stands for 'injection'.

The most common things to go wrong (that I am aware of) are:

    - excess wear on suspension (ranging from broken springs to ball joints)
    - immobiliser problems (often related to the 'sender unit')
    - failing components on the instrument panel (fuel guage, temp control, computer display)
    - failing 'screen' on climate control display (looses pixels)
    - water leaks into the car from blocked drainage holes
    - faulty MAF sensor
    - lack of turbo boost (bosch 0281 ECU)
    - faulty central locking

    Happy Motoring
If the shoe fits, get another just like it.......

On a 97 A4, the red 'I' denotes 115bhp, rather than the 100 or 110 of the standard model.

    Hello,

My first A4 was a 1998 1.9tdi quattro. I clocked the car up to 135k. The car was basically faultless until the day I sold it. Only had to replace the engine temp sensor once which cost me 20 quid. Both inside and out was inshowroom condition.

I then upgraded to my brothers old 1998 2.5tdi V6 A4. I have helped clock the car up to 200k. The car still drives great today. Cant believe how torquey it is. It out runs most cars on the road. Just got to remember to drive slowly. Even when I tow my speed boat on the back (1700kg), the car doesnt even know its on the back.

Recently had to replace Air mass sensor after 200k. Also the car has developed a broken wire loom. However dispite these two problems, I'm now saving towards my 3.0 tdi A4 (Mk III).

Can't want. Only 18 months to go.

    Wohoo

    Mike.
The red 'I' on pre 2000 cars denotes the 110 BHP engine, normal I 90 BHP, 100 Bhp and 115 Bhp engines are PD diesels from late 2000 cars onwards.

If you look in the spare wheel well theres a large white sticker which give Chasis number, Engine code and power in Kw and the option chosen by original purchaser...this aplies to all VW-Audi Cars.

No idea on the mirror, I would try a breaker first.

The under tray only add sound deading i wouldn't bother, or try and get one from a scrappy.
