    Hi,
Can anyone give any advice on buying a high mileage A4. I am thinking of getting a 2002 02 plate A4 avant 2.0 SE Multitronic with 140000 on the clock. It is up for £5450. I think it is very cheap for a B6 but will it last. What car value it at £5095 and glass's at £7100. Does anyone think the mileage may be a problem. It has 9 stamps in the book. It says the cambelt has been changed but I assume this was at 80,000, so it would need doing again soon. I already have an A6 2.8 quattro auto with 156,000 on it and it runs like a dream. Had it 2 years and only needed a water pump. The main thing that worries me is the multitronic as i have heard bad things about them and the 4 cyl engine. Is it just a myth that V6's run longer than 4 cyl?
    Thanks
    Chris

I think your right with being concerned with the box but it does seem to be on the bigger engined diesels you get grief. You say iy has 9 stamps in the book are they from a main agent? if so you could give them a call with the reg number and ask them what work has been carried out so you get a more detailed history of the car. I did this and founder the dealer helpful. Just an idea but if you were to spend that sort of money on a vw passat you would get one really nice car and after all under the skin there almost the same car (but I'm pretty sure they don't use the multitronic box)

If you have to ask you wouldn't understand

just a bit of info.. i have a 2.0 Sport Saloon with about 125k on it now.. and it run's like it did on day one...

Things to look out for on this engine is the coil packs.. these only cost £25 each, (4 Cylinder) so £100 covers it.. i have found these last about 60k..

Other things i have come across, a few split hoses, (Air, Vacum) which i have replaced.. - about a £10 ish..

The Outer CV joints start ticking away when turning around 100K.. - Cost about £150 to replace..

MAF, or Airt flow meter... is common ish.. had no issues touch wood.. £100.00

    Clutch Relase bearings... about 100K..

Water Pump and Cambelt plus all belts and tennsioners, EVERY 60K..
Cost around £150 for Parts for OEM parts from AUDI.

    ----

    Internal things...

The PRINT on the buttons for the Radio and air con started to wear on mine around 90k...

Every thing else.. like day one..

    Cheers

    RickT

Hi Rick T, I am just coming up to a 1/4 million miles in my 2002 A4 Avant 1.9 TDI 130. Only problems I have had were down to a flooded ECU box which resulted in the failiure of the Fuel pump relay, apart from brakes disks and tyres every thing else is original and when it is washed it still looks and drives like new! It is probably not worth a lot now but I am fascinated to see just what it will do before it lets me know that it wants to retire!

I have a 2002 A4 Avant 1.9TDI 130 manual box with almost 250K on the clock, I have had few problems with it, just the usual flooded ECU box etc., and have run it in some pretty extreme conditions -20C in Norway for weeks on end to the other extremes in more southern climes. I have recently bought an A6 Allroad 2.5 V6 Auto with 90K on the clock and although it is well suited to skating around the frozen roads of Northern Norway it does not feel as reliable as the old A4. The gearbox seems to have a mind of its own and the engine sounds as if it would be better placed in something a bit more agricultural! It has not let me down yet however so it will be interesting to see if it makes it to 200K without falling apart. In essence I would have no worries about the 4 cylinder engine, I reckon it is just about bombproof but the auto box would put me off if it is anything like the Allroad variety.

My B6 1.9tdi 130 Avant has been excellent in the four years I've owned it. Had a few irritating problems like the windscreen wiper motor and linkage, ARB, rear wheel bearing and brake servo (due to plenum chamber blockage), but relatively speaking, not bad. As an Audi approved car, Audi have eventually been very good with these problems when raised with HO - they have either contributed to or paid in full for most of the more costly problems when out of warranty. Mine has only (?) 96000 miles though, so not that high mileage.

I'm thinking of selling mine at the moment as I fancy a change. Put some feelers out for a private sale on here and other popular car forums.
