I've got a 2003 2.5tdi A4 convertible, recently had a service at audi dealership and they recommended needed new pads front and rear and new discs on the front. They quoted about 300quid. I declined there offeras thought was a bit steep. I have no car knowledge but have looked and can get parts for about 100. What does everyone think is a reasonable price for this work and can anyone recommend anyone in the norfolk area?

    thanks,
    Scott

Is an easy job, do you have any friends that are mechanicaly minded? Failing that get a few quotes from local independant garages, ask friends and neigbours, there should be plenty of little back street garages that would do a good job at a reasonable price, stay away from Kwikfit type operations as they will rip you off, also beaware that some places may not guarntee the work if you supply the parts and some will only do the job if they supply the parts.

you don't need to pay VAG specialist prices to fit 2 front discs and front and rear pads though. To be honest it's the kind of job I'd pay someone to do because I couldn't be ***** to get my hands dirty, it's basic stuff and I would go with the people that offer best price.

I did mine last week - front and rear pads together came to around £50 as I remember - not genuine parts but absolutely fine. Overall the job took me 2 hours. The rear ones are slightly tricky in that you have to wind the brake piston in while applying pressure (I use a disc cutter disc remover tool and brush handle to apply lever pressure). Spend £20 0n an A4 Haynes manual as I did and have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself and saving money. You may get frustrated and dirty though! I would assume an independant garage will charge around £150 inclusive for the job.

Due to my complete lack of car knowledge i would cause more damage than good attempting the job but thanks for the advise.I found my quote from audi dealership this morning and for new pads front and rear and front discs they want 415quid!!!! i've spoke to a local garage this morning and there going to check them next week and i hope offer a more sensible price for the job than that.i expect to pay around half that after looking at the price of parts online.

    thanks,
    scott

Sorry, I didn't notice the disc bit... £415 isn't too bad. The rears are cheap (£25 a pair - non VAG) but the front ones aren't.
