I have a 99 T Passat 110bhp est that has a heater fan that only ocasionally works. The climate control module lcd panel flashes with all sorts of symbols upon start up for approx 5 secs then appears normal except that the fan does not come on (only works about 1 in 10 trips now). When the fan does work is does make a few strange noises and is below speed.

Should I start by replacing climate control module or the fan. (parts from a dismantler). How do I gain access to the fan. Where is it?

The cold snap means that this is a to do soon job now.

    Frozen.

    Thanks for any clues.

Hi, just joined the forum, I have exactly the same problem. Usually the climate control system won't work when i start up, the control panel flashes as if it's testing the display panel, then appears to show normal function, however nothing works either in demist/auto/econ. Occasionally works after a while or not at all. After having driven the car to work and then starting up during the day it all works ok. It's a bit bafflling, any ideas?? ( R reg 1.8 20v)

flashing display on ac control unit signifies it has a fault or needs basics of actuators resetting diag machine to do!
fan fault check fan unit itself r/i glove box and r/i fan motor for inspection suspect fan itself but also resistors play up suspect water ingress into fan motor

I had kinda this problem, climatronic ok but fan became intermittent and noisy. So I removed fan, cleaned motor commutator and all is ok. Brushes worn so I've bought a replacement pair of brushes from e-bay for £15. Gonna fit when I have time.

    Good Luck

Thank you for your replies..... yes the answer is the heater fan, car has done 150,000 miles and hence the fan has worked a lot with using the climatronic, cleaned up the com and reversed the brushes, all fine now. Will fit new brushes when they arrive.

Just like to say the people on the forum are very helpful, best forum i've been on.
