Then take a shufty here: http://volkswagen.msk.ru/

Go Transmissions, and look under Passat B5, as they shared many components with the B6 A4 range.
In the vehicle data section of the service book it says

    gearbox: M5S
    gearbox code: DUK

Not sure what these mean apart from presumably 'Manual 5 gears'. Nothing like the codes that you say though unless i'm looking in the wrong place. Thanks.

    OK, that's the correct info.

The "M5S", as you correctly guessed, simply means Manual 5 speed.

The code of "DUK" is a little harder to work out for the un-initiated - however, I can confirm that that code translates into an 012 gearbox!

Just for info, all VW/Audi gearbox codes are converted into build types, and you can confirm for yourself from this handy PDF (right click > save target as) http://volkswagen.msk.ru/vw_doc2/trans/vw_gkb-type.pdf.

The actual manual for your 012 box will be found here: http://volkswagen.msk.ru/index.php?p=page05_012.

Thanks for your help. One last point... It says to use 75W/90 synthetic. Would you suggest I go to the Audi dealer or would an alternative be ok? I live near to Euro Car Parts in Leicester so I was going to call in there to see whether they have this specification of oil. Sorry if this question is obvious to some of you but i get confused whether it would be the same product and whether the dealer will just charge more for it. Cheers.

OK, as that was mentioned in the non-factory manual, I would recomend you check out the following Castrol Lubricants Advisor: http://www.ew2.lubesinfo.com/framese...=1156&langid=1 - you will need to refresh the web session, then enter your details fully. If it states "refer to dealer" for the transmission fluid, then only genuine VAG trans fluid should be used.

ECP could potentially sell you anything, and being as the gearbox could be a costly item to repair, for an extra few quid, hop over to Blackbird Road, and get some genuine fluid from them. You never know, you might even see my new RS4 being prepped in there!!!!

Thanks. I will take your advice and call in at the Audi Dealer. I will keep an eye out for the RS4 (you lucky b@gger!).

I went to the Audi dealer today. I was going to buy 3 litres of transmission oil and then get my garage to change the lot. However,it costs £12.13 + VAT a liter so i just got the one bottle.

The refrence no is: G052 911 A2 if anyone knows what that is? I'm going to use it whatever as i have already spent too much time on deciding what oil to use.

Teutonic Tamer - there was a red RS4 there but it was for sale and it had a private plate.
