Does anyone know the interval for a 2001 A4 TDi 115? Also, does anyone know what type to use to try and improve the gearchange quality.

My car has done 106k and although the change is not too bad there is a bit of awkwardness into 2nd. Maybe this is just normal on the A4?

    Thaks for your help.

As Rick pointed out, we need to know weather your box is auto or manual?

The transmission components are supposed to be filled for life (with the exception for Multitronic [40k oil and filter], DSG [40k oil and filter], Haldex [20k oil, 40k oil an filter]).

However, common wisdom would deem any transmission fluid be changed anywhere between 40k and 80k miles. Afterall, on a conventionally mounted gearbox, and separate rear final drive unit, the oil change is relatively easy and straightforward, and even the average home mechanic could do it, providing the correct vehicle lifting equipment, and stands were used.

The fluid is OEM only - no aftermarket alternatives should be used!

If you do wanna change the fluid, post again, and I'll add some tips for diagnosis.

Sorry, yes it is a 5 speed manual gearbox. I would like to know how to change the oil if you could tell me. Thanks for your advice.

Do you mean a 6 point star shaped female socket hole, with a nipple like post in the centre? If so, then that is a Torx security screw/bolt, and a Torx security, or "tamperproof" bit or driver will be needed.

http://www.cromwell.co.uk/searchform - use "Torx" in the description box.

Or find a local Draper, or Richmond tools stockist. I've got bit sets from both, but I'd imagine the drain and filler plugs to be quite a bit larger than my offerings!

Or if you really want to flash the cash, a Snap-On man in a van.

Look on your car data sticker, either in your service book, or under the boot carpet, and find the three digit gearbox code, something like 012, or 01W.

Then take a shufty here: http://volkswagen.msk.ru/

Go Transmissions, and look under Passat B5, as they shared many components with the B6 A4 range.

In the vehicle data section of the service book it says

    gearbox: M5S
    gearbox code: DUK

Not sure what these mean apart from presumably 'Manual 5 gears'. Nothing like the codes that you say though unless i'm looking in the wrong place. Thanks.

Is the Passat engine longitude then like the A4 as I thought all the VWs were transverse even the Golf R32 with 4wd.

I think my box code is GBD, i'll have to check.

    OK, that's the correct info.

The "M5S", as you correctly guessed, simply means Manual 5 speed.

The code of "DUK" is a little harder to work out for the un-initiated - however, I can confirm that that code translates into an 012 gearbox!

Just for info, all VW/Audi gearbox codes are converted into build types, and you can confirm for yourself from this handy PDF (right click > save target as) http://volkswagen.msk.ru/vw_doc2/trans/vw_gkb-type.pdf.

The actual manual for your 012 box will be found here: http://volkswagen.msk.ru/index.php?p=page05_012.
