    Hi there! First post here

I apologies if this sort of post has been 'done to death' basically im after some oppinions on a new Golf.

Im after a GT TDi Mark 4 and have seen a Y reg 110 5 Speed for £6500 with 79k on the clock and full service history at a dealer. Idealy I wanted the 115bhp with the 6 speed box however I may be pushed with the £6500 budget.

So my question is...should I really be hold out for GT TDi 115? Would I be buying into a much better car? or should I stop messing about and buy it!

    Any opinions are welcome here!

    Cheers
    Craggsy

PS First Golf I owned was a Mark 2 1989 (i think) 1.3ltr. The car I learned to drive in. Wouldnt start unless it was a sunday and 0-60 in 6 months but it was the best car i ever owned

ok, LOL welcome to the forum first of all.. now to the matter in hand (metephorically speaking)

first of all, it is possible to get a car you want for less than 6500k.

i bought my 115 6 spd gt tdi on a w plate, with 76k on the clock, for a snip under 5200, you just have to keep your eye out

the main difference between the 110bhp & the 115bhp is tha the 110 is a VE engine, the 115 is a PD (pump deuce). the PD is a newer technology, slightly quieter and a touch more powerful. the older VE's are solid engines in their own right and by no means inferior... just that they do not tend to chip as well.

if it were me, id think twice about payin 6500 for a y plate with 79k on the clock, knock about 500/800 off and you're about right.... id say wait until you find a 115, or even better, a 130bhp - the perfect balance between the high end 150bhp for power and the lower 115bhp for economy

Hi eshrules, cheers for the quick response!

Great advise there, this is the first Mark 4 Golf ive seen and test drove, and just fell in love with it really, 3 door in red, beautiful! I think id regret it later down the line if I didnt hold out and get the 115bhp!

There are a few 115bhp around my budget but there higher miles. I know these engines can go on for ever when well looked after, is there a point where you have to worry about the turbo?

Got to agree with Carl, I've got 01 GTTDI 115bhp 6 speed, and picked it up private for £5200 with 57k on the clock.

Definitly hold out for the 115 if poss.

It pays to be patient but like you as soon as you drive one you want one

    Happy hunting

the turbo is a constant thing to watch really, but that would be the same with any car. let me give you the list of things to check (ill be pming a mod after this to make a sticky LOL)

Service History - as important as the V5, no service history....walk away. any golf approaching 60k should have its timing belt & tensioner done. for earlier PD engines, 40k. irrespective of the mileage, if the car is 4 or more years old, the timing belt & tensioner must be done. a lot of people choose to have the water pump done at the samer time. the origional water pump is flawed in that it only has plastic fins, which can become broken or ineffcient over time, causing the pump to be either ineffective or sometimes seize completley.

Suspension & bushes - the entire mk4 range is renowned for worn bushes and suspension arms, checks to be made : front anti roll bar links/bushes/track rod ends, front and rear suspension bushes, front wishbones/bushs. also have a look underneath, check shock absorbers for any visible leakage, youll soon know if they're knackerd on a test drive.

Turbo - take the car for a spin, from cold. first check to make is to see any signs of smoke when you boot it, small short bursts are to be expected, its a diesel, but any lingering blue or white smoke is a bad sign. take it on a good stretch of m.way and open her up, you should be able to easily take it to 3300/3400 without any problems in 3rd, 4th & 5th (6th your likely to be exceeding the speed limit). bring her back down and if the car feels as if its just lost all power at those rev ranges, theres something wrong with the turbo. if any hesitancy was felt on the way up the rev count, or you struggle to get past 3k revs, will more than likely have a MAF issue.

Engine - check the oil filler cap for any white foam/residue, indicative of cylinder head/head gasket failure, although not a common occurance on these cars, its well worth checking.

Boot/Luggage compartment - ensure all interior lights work as they ought to, especially the boot light, if it doesnt work, or the boot open sensor doesnt display on the dash when engine is running, there is the possible issue with the rear wash wipe leaking, a common occurence on mk4s but not a quick fix.

other than that... research your previous owner, make sure that service history is up to scratch and that the supplying dealer performs a proper oil change before it comes to you, using the correct grade of oil, not some crappy all grade tescos value....

give it time, research your cars and read all the small print.... you wont go wrong

apologies for hijacking this thread but this is a concern i have had for a while now. i am pretty certain about buying an x reg 115bhp model. does that mean it will have a 6 speed box or was this an extra?

    Woza.

hi, if you need specific answers to your questions, pls use a new thread, it helps to keep all threads on topic and helps others when searching, just a quick answer, not all 115 are fitted with 6sp boxes, t'was an option, some have it, some dont.... just one of those things

hi and welcome to the forum

try introducing yourself so we know a little about yourself

    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum//...splay.php?f=82

secondly, you might want to post this under a new thread, with an appropriate title, you're kinda off topic with your post and it tends to confuse other members when performing a forum search for a specific topic

    I thought I would post an update;

Still looking!! Im on the autotrader everyday, getting pretty sick of looking. Wish dealers would post the milliage too, rang about a dozen yesturday to find thay've all done over 100k

So.. another quick question, im always conscious about high milliage cars, what are peoples views of sensible miles?

Also is this too good to be true, 29k miles? £6500!
