You can to a cetain extent but the leaking in the footwell is not always that obvious - you'll only pay around 35 quid for a new master cylnder at vw so it might be worth a try!

The slave cylinder in the gearbox is a common fault leaking slowing dropping the pressure in the system and also leaking fluid onto your new clutch! I think the new slave cylinder is about £30 from main dealer only but means your gearbox is out again
