ask your self this, what would you be doing if you found you had inadvertantly overpaid for the item, by £200?.
could you live with yourself knowing that the person that served you will probably get the sack? they probably have kids and a mortgage to pay, and as a result of this, their house will be reposessed and a whole family will be living rough.
tuff luck really, they should have paid more attention to their job.hope you get to keep your £ 200.

In the good old days before chip and pin you were asked to check the amount and sign, now most retailers don't ask you to check the amount before entering your pin number.
I'm not sure this is true (I'm no expert either), I thought that in order to put it through as a "buyer not present" transaction nowadays they need the 3 digit security code on the back of your card as well. That info definitely isn't on the transaction slip. Good luck though.

Not all cards require the 3 digit security number, I used to use the Procurer system which is PC based and also the Streamline chip and pin type system so I have experience of card processing, however we suplied trade accounts mainly so we had other contact details. I asked my local fishing tackle shop today and they said once the payment has gone through, they have no way of changing that payment and they categorigaly said they could not rectify a mistake once the transaction had been authorised.

if the amount you keyed your PIN for was £75.00 and not the £275.00 i would expect the shop will not chase it up.. its not your gault.

The only thing they could do is contact VISA, but due to the data protection act they cant give them your personal details... VISA may contact you but i doubt it for only £200.00..

I used to be a very heavy gambler and regularly did £30K in bets in a day, once I got over paid by £1,500 I took it back as soon as I found out.
Where I live I am now known for this and am allowed to put bets on of up to £5K without having the cash with me, if it loses I then went to the bank to pay them, the times this allowed me to win more than payed the £1,500 and I felt real good about it.

I'm not in that league now back down to earth but if it happened again I would still do it, I'll never be megga rich but I have a lot of decent friends.

I couldn't live with the fact that someone will either have to pay it or might even get the sack, pay it back it WILL make you feel better.

I hate to be a spoil sport but when you agree to buy something you enter into a contract. Your contract was for £275.00 so despite the clerks mistake you still owe £200.00. The shop are entitled to ask for payment via the card or to get their goods back. It's up to the shop to decide what they want to do. I supect you will hear from your card company or bank in the next couple of months. If you don't hear in a couple of months you can probably celebrate.
