Just wondering if anyone get tell me what the situation is with this?

Just had a wander round the town and spent £275 in a shop. The till receipt shows £275, but by visa receipt shows that I have only paid £75 which was verified by PIN. Obviously later today, or later in the week, they will notice a £200 shortfall somewhere in their system.

Can they charge the additional £200 to my account while I’m not present, or am I going for a celebratory pint on the way home?

    Any ideas...

Diffecult one this, they will pick it up when they cash up and their reciept will have your card number etc. on it. However I don't think they can legaly put the payment through without your permision, we used to take card payments where I used to work and if mistakes were made we had to ring the customer, however we weren't in the retail sector.

happened to me before. Things have slightly changed, you'll get a call from your credit card provider. In a week or so.

If it was say in Argos for example. You brought a T.V. And the clumsy assistant charged you £75. At the end they found to be short and realized you just got a Sony T.V for £75. They then need to prove the value of the item. Your card provider will get in touch with you and deduct. They won't just deduct it...if they do be livid! Because your receipt won't be correct, should you need to return the item/warranty purposes.

Thing is...it can also be at your fault. Receiving the goods by deception. Knowing how much you spent, and not prepared to come clear and pay the rest up. (leave that for you to make a judgement on that)

Some stores arn't allowed to take C/C over the phone. So may ask you come in or have it deducted by the credit card company.

I suggest you hang on and wait for the phone to buzz. I received a letter. I didn't pay, they closed the store like 3 months later.(student at the time and had a lack of funds. I had to ring them like twice a month. Explaining I had no job) by the time i went to pay them they shut down. ...hopefully not because they didn't get my £40. I rang their admin group, they said nothing they can do as they had no records...

You may be lucky and get away with it. It could go into their discrepancy pouch (doubt £200 would go a miss! lol). Then the assistant at fault gets the sack or deduction from their wages.

    Cheers Andy J,

I’ll wait and see what happens with this as they don’t know who I am apart from the details from the card. I doubt very much that they would be able to re-do the transaction without me present.

Think I go for a celebratory pint anyway

the merchant copy of the card reciept has all the details on, they could put the payment through as 'buyer not present' ehether they can do this without your permision is another matter.

In the good old days before chip and pin you were asked to check the amount and sign, now most retailers don't ask you to check the amount before entering your pin number.

That would obviously be the honest responsible thing to do but; -

    a. I won’t get my pint on the way home
    b. Think of the fun me and the kids will have every time the phone rings and we pretend to be an Indian call centre

I usually find that honesty is the best policy. These things always come back to bite you. Have a pint anyway thinking of the bit of interest that you’re getting while the £200 is in your account
I reject your reality and substitute my own
