  1. Question Clicking noise in A6 Dash driver side Help!?

I have been searching for a solution for this annoying clicking noise that occurs while accelerating in my 2002 A6. I've read that it may be related to the climate control vents (which seems to be a possibility), but I'm not sure what to do.
ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS RANDOM CLICKING DURING ACCELERATION?

Turn the air con off completely and try it. Also try, when nothing is around putting the emergency flashes on to see it it halts the clicking. Don't question it just try it and report back. Regards Peter

Tried both suggestions on the way to work this morning. Putting the flashers on and/or turning off the AC made no change in the clicking noise. I had an incling that it may be the flasher unit for some time and just by chance, last week, my flashers stopped working. I got a new flasher unit put in because they were completely dead and the problem is still there!! ugh!!

Anyway, the clicking (though similar to clicking noise that flashers make) is not coming from the same location (this noise is on the left hand side of dash near the headlight switch). I guess there is a possibility that It could be any electrical unit, but I just find it so peculiar that it only occurs during accleeration?

Are you in Europe of the US as you appear to have a light switch on the left hand side. Is the clicking regular and at what speed. and what is you engine code. It is detailed on the Label in the service book or in the spare wheel bay. Regards Peter

I am in the US so headlamp switch corresonds to the vehicle (left) driver side.

I will have to get the Engine Code from the spare bay during my lunch because I dont see it in the owners manual. It is a V6 3.0L (non-quattro). Is this the "Engine Code" = VIN#? The sticker in my wheel bay is torn and I don't there is nothing on the owners manual.

The clicking is slightly irregular, more like morris code or something at a frequency of 2-4 clicks per second. For the most part the clicking starts as soon as I release my foot from the brake pedal and begin moving. It never clicks when my foot is on the brake pedal. It will continue to click (usually) until I release the accelerator. While I am coasting (as if going down a hill on the highway), It will not persist unless I put my foot back on the gas pedal.

BTW Peter, Thank you for your thoughts.

Hi On the 8 point relay carrier in position 1 you have the relay for the solenoid valves for abs with esp,This could relate to the fact, that the use of the brake pedal is affecting the relay,in some way.

hmm.. I didn't think about the ABS relay. But the only issue I see with that theory is what about when Im coasting on the highway? never clicks when coasting either... only during acceleration.
Lately I've been leaning towards possibly an issue with the Cruise Control but turning it off doesn't do anything either. BTW, all of my dash instruments and gauges seem to be working fine.

Hi You need to get your hand up to the relay carrier and feel which relay it is,Or do you know anyone in the trade? There is equipment, wireless transmitters, these are very handy to locate noises. The tool consists of 4 small transmitters which you place around the area where you think the noise is coming from. You have a receiver in the car with 4 switched controlled channels one to each tramsmitter, and hi presto you can pin point where the noise is most. Each transmitter has a working distance of 3 meter

    Hi Peter,

I'm having the same/similiar clicking noise and mine DOES go away when the Aircon is switched off. I'm assuming you have an idea what's causing it ?

    Many thanks,
    Cheers

    Eddie.
