Hi There is the possibility that there is a faullt with the connector or the wires or the crash sensor is defective.Clear the fault code, remove one of the battery terminals, and check the connector and the wires to the sensor,we have in many cases removed the connector and soldered the wires, and making sure they are well insulated.Replace the battery terminal and see if the fault returns,if so, then you need a new sensor

    Hi Mell
Did you manage to get anywhere with this? I have the same problem. Located the sensor and removed before registering on here but I am having trouble finding an exact match for the part number on ebay etc. All others seem to have variations with an additional suffix (either A,B,C,D or E). I know one of these is the rear one whereas I need the centre one. Also, I have "RB4 HV" on mine and I can't seem to find any other with this. Any idea if it matters? Any advice is gratefully received...
    Many thanks.

    Hi Kenney
you seem to know your stuff on this! I have the same problem with the side airbag sensor. I know one of these is the rear one whereas I need the centre one. Also, I have "RB4 HV" on mine and I can't seem to find any others with this. Any idea if it matters? Seriously, this is a sensor that controls explosives in your car that may prevent you getting killed in an accident. My advice? Go to the dealer (or TPS if you know a freindly person with an account), hand over the cash, get a genuine correct unused part with known history. If they don't have it in stock it will be with you in a couple of days. No, I don't work for a dealer, but I had the same problem. I wouldn't contemplate buying a part like this from ebay!

I recently replaced this sensor on my 2002 A4 1.9 TDI with a used one off eBay costing £15 delivered.

I did my research and found this was a common fault and could be replaced once the battery was disconnected. After replacement my airbag light went off without the need of a diagnostic tool.

My sensor part number was 8E0 959 643 without any letter on the end. The significance of not having the letter on the end seemed to be that it meant the sensor had two bolt holes with threads for the fixing bolts to screw into and furthermore the bolt holes were flush with the plastic casing not proud like they were on sensors with the same part number but with a letter on the end.

The reason my sensor failed was becuase the door carrier seals had perished allowing water to enter the cabin via the door sill - soaking into the foam upon which the sensor sat - the water had then corroded the sensor - even my used replacement sensor showed signs of some water damage . . . I hope to replace the perished foam door carrier seals with butyl strip at some point and produce a 'how to'. I have done the job previously on a Seat Leon where the problem is much worse.
