My boss had one of these as a courtesy car today whilst his 2.0T S-line (petrol) was being serviced.

We went for a quick spin at lunch and I was amazed! What an incredible car - seriosuly quick (thanks to MASSIVE torque figure) and an addictive growly engine note (from inside at least).

I'm a petrol head through and through but this has changed my views on diesel forever. Brilliant car!

    Hi,

Did you notice what year the registration was? The later models tend to be the 233bhp version. A Q7 engine in a saloon is a nice recipe

Mine was the 204bhp version until I had it tickled by Motech.. it's such a brut now!

If you told me I'd be driving a diesel 2 years ago, I would have laughed at you.. (I had a 4.2 S6 at the time). The V6 means you don't get the unrefined feeling of a normal 4cylinder diesel - that was the thing that always put me off diesels.

It's torque that makes driving fun and as you mentioned, the 3.0 has it in bucket loads!

It was an 08 plate so probably one of the last B7's (and therefore 233bhp version?).

We took it a spin down a nearby dual carrigeway and the ferociosness with which it could pick up speed was amazing. Makes my old 1.8T petrol feel very weedy!

I bet in day to day driving your 'fettled' 3.0TDI is every bit as quick as the S6 was but twice as good on fuel?

Would definitely consider a diesel now but funds probably limit me to a B6. How did you find the 2.5TDI? Was it anything like the 3.0?

    Hi,

Being a V6 turbo diesel, the 3.0 has better low-down grunt than the S6's V8.

When you put your pedal to the medal in the S6, it was brutal.. it wouldn't totally obliterate the 3.0 (especially a rempaed one) but it would quickly start to pull away and widen it's lead in straight line race! As you say; in every day driving the 3.0 is just as quick and about 3 times better on fuel!

I was driving a 730d the other day and it reminded me of the S6, a big, heavy boat of a car. It also made me realise:
    • The A4 is a reasonable compact saloon
    • The A4 is reasonably light
    • I'm really pleased I don't own a huge car anymore!
    • I hate rear wheel drive in wet weather!
The scary thing about the S6 was the cost of the parts and servicing.
The worry of what would go wrong next overshadowed the enjoyment of driving! (apart from those brief moments when hammering it - it sounded like a Nascar!)

The fuel was shocking - 21mpg when driving very sensibly on the motorway! That's why I got rid of it - it was bleeding me dry.

Unfortunately my 2.5 had a problem under heavy acceleration (it felt like a misfire), so I couldn't really get a feel for how powerful it was. It did have plenty of grunt for every day driving. I can say however, that diesels are much more fun with manual gears - you can make much better use of the torque!

I would recommend a 2.5 TDI Quattro B6 180bhp - I would have happily kept mine if there wasn't so many things wrong with it! There are some 163bhp versions out there, so make sure you get the one with the extra performance! It's a strong engine, so you'd be relatively safe getting it chipped.
