What years and wich motors ? The 1.9 tdi came in different flavours from 110Bhp to 130 Bhp. The v6 tdi also had 150 and 180 Bhp(some quattro models after 2001). For fuel economy i would go for the VE 110 bhp(slugish but up to 60Mpg !) or the PD 130 6speed. A bit thyrstier but generaly reliable bar a few flywheel/clutch problems. For any other reason go for the v6 tdi ! Lovely engine note, torquey engines and the Mpg is'nt that bad but it will pull like a train from 60 to 120 Mph. In town, there is not much difference between the pd130 and the v6 in terms of acceleration but on motorway (at speeds over 80Mph) the v6 will pull away in any gear ! The v6 had a few camshafts failures and they are a bit difficult to work on but they are very reliable indeed. Find one with a proof of cambelt replacement or knock a good 500 notes off the price as it will cost you double at the dealer(or get in touch with me and have it done for 400 notes all in)... Maintenance is easy and i would only use fully synthethic oil in it for long life of turbocharger and less wear on the camshafts.

i get 420ish miles to a full tank in my 2.5v6 with mixed driving, so economy isn't too bad but isn't great either. As the previous poster said the 180 goes really well and actually has quite a nice sound for a diesel. I think the 1.9 is more like 500-550 miles to a tank.

I would certainly recommend the 2.5 as it's superb to drive, but I haven't driven the 1.9 to compare it to. Maybe you should drive both and weigh up the economy vs performance and take it from there.

Also a remap will see around 30bhp increase on the 2.5 or 40bhp on the 1.9 with little change to fuel economy (some claim better if anything) so that's something to consider. Maybe a remapped 1.9 would be a good compromise?

I get around 570-630 miles out of my 1.9 tdi 130 6 speed, thats mostly outside lane motorway speeds plus abit of town driving aswell.

I think the 130 has all the power you need, pulls well in all gears and goes really well at motorway speeds.

i have a chipped afn 1.9 passat and love it to bits, claimed 143hp, up from 110, going to get it rolling roaded to get a figure. i nearly went for a v6 but couldnt find a good one, there must be some good ones out there, depends on what you can afford to run, i get 60+mpg on every journey average, i'd like a v6 but heard about the running costs concerning cam belts etc and the auto boxes, but that was an a6 i was looking at, i presume the box was same as in the passats. the a6 is still up for sale 8 months later, i pass it every day.

You should drive the v6 then... Me old a4 v6 tdi quattro would do little over 600 miles on a full tank on german autobahn and i wouldnt baby it either ! After i have fitted the 3L block the fuel ecconomy plummeted from 45+ to 27 average but would keep up with porsches and m3's ! I do have both cars(passat1.tdi and a6 2.5 tdi) and driven many models, the closest torquey engine to the v6 tdi is the 2.7 bi turbo but that won't do 25Mpg average... The 1.9 is ok to use round town and ok-ish on the motorway up to 100Mph but it runs out of puff after and the engine is noisy. Its either on boost or sluggish off boost, no real torque at all without the turbocharger ! The v6 is smooth as silk though and will go at 140Mph all day long... Matter of fact, i was clocked in Austria at 154Mph in me old v6 tdi quattro and had to pay 200 euros fine ! Had somme 17" rims with phat tyres and me speedo only showed 148 Mph. Sorry officer did not knew i was travelling that fast !?!

Id love the 3.0 tdi quattro but being 18 insurance is abit of an issue.

I had a vectra 1.9cdti 150bhp for a little while, talk about turbo lag, i think thats why that Audi feels so nice to drive.

Never noticed it being noisy, always have the stereo up full blast
