2005 VW Golf 1.6 se fsi. 30.000 miles. My car is due for a long life service. Last service 24th Jan 2007, but what really NEEDS to be done from the list. Example... toothed belt ??? changed and toothed belt tensioning roller ??? changed. On its last service in 2007 the jobs done were... Oil change service. Interval service. Interval service inspection. Long life engine oil used & Dust & pollen filter changed. Jobs not done were... Spark plugs not changed. Air filter not changed. Fuel filter not changed. Toothed belt not changed. Toothed belt tensioner not changed & brake fluid service not done. I use an independant non VW garage and dont want to pay out for unnecessary items, eg, Do I really need new spark plugs? Thanks in advance. Jay Gee

No matter what engine you have, If a toothed belt (cambelt) is due for renewal, have it done. If the belt snaps you are looking at £1000's to have the engine repaired.

As Pup says, if it's in the schedule then get it done. I think 4 years or 60,000 miles is correct for a cambelt on the Golf. So you would be due for a new one on the basis that its been 4 years. Having said that, my wife left hers for 5 years as the mileage was low. It's up to you if you want to take the risk.

Your brake fluid should have been replaced two years ago, so that definitely should be done. I also think that the other items will need doing as they haven't been changed for 4 years.

This information is correct for a MkIV Golf, the MkV could be different. Somewhere near the front of the service book it will tell you what needs doing and when.
