Hi folks , just boiling my head. I have a 1999 A3 se tdi. I have just fitted new discs and pads on the rear, front where done 3 months previous. Brakes where working fine but had a sticky rear passenger side caliper so decided to fit a reconditioned one. this is where it all goes pete tong! i had the brake cable tied up under the arch to prevent brake fluid loss and air getting into the system but the cable slipped during the night and copious amounts of brake fluid escaped and prob let in air. i have bled the whole system according to the manual but yet no brakes and no joy as the brake pedal seems to try stiffen but then goes to the floor. According to the haynes manual there is 2 types of braking system.....20....or 60, does anyone have an idea wat mine is as it doesnt state, but im using bleed braking hose and have went in order front drivers side, front passenger side, rear drivers side and thus rear passenger side but it seems i am clearly missing something. Seems to be nothing wrong with master cylinder, hoses etc. Could it just be a load of air and system and it just needs a completely thourough bleed?????????

master cylinder has (2) bleed points and abs must be cycled via software command while bleeding at wheel calipers

Second that, you need vag-com or similar to cycle the ABS pump on or off to expell trapped air. If you can get the car on a grassy field, braking hard to engage the ABS will do the same thing but it might be ineficient due to too much air in the system...

Hi mate, new on here today, but had the same problem with my Golf R32 - think they have the same braking system. I spent ages trying to bleed the brakes and could not solve it, and also cycled the ABS pump with Vag Com - No joy. In the end I took it to my mate how had a "Power Bleeder" which did the trick.

Don't worry you hven't damaged anything.

The ABS should only need to be cycled if a new one is fitted, other than that the fluid should stay trapped inless its activated. Been there myself and it was that hidden 8mm screw on the master cylinder that caused the problem.
