Poor MPG from A4 TDI 1999

Hi There,

This is my first post, i have just bought an Audi A4 1.9 TDI 1999 and i am only getting around 20mpg on average.

Does anyone know why this is as i have bought this car to be good on fuel and am quite dissapointed.

Some thing is wrong there...

Get it onto VAG-COm and check any errors...

if nothing found... first of all i would suggest doing a quick service... ie.. air / oil filter and oil....

How many miles are on it??

Ouch! As Rick says, start with the mini service as this is a good baseline, then get them codes read on a diagnostic.

The car has done 120,000 miles with full audi service history, i believe it is due for a service anyway so i will get that done and hopefully see some difference.

What is the tests you are talking about? Is that from Audi themselves and how much does it cost?

Suggest you go to an indie and get them to read the fault codes and then possibly clearing any codes found. If it is an Avant the OBD port is in the rear ashtray. Looks like a scart socket.

Mines done 132000 and I get 52mpg, but I was getting allot less when the MAF was faulty. Does the car pull well and rev over 3000 easily?

Hi,

I have only just bought the car and previously had a 2.0 Turbo Volvo S40 which obviously was alot faster and reved alot higher than a diesel so it is hard for me to judge.
It seems to pull pretty well till around 3000 but then there doesnt seem alot of power after that, should it rev to the red line easily?

Ive got a 130 tdi, have onli used £20 worth of fuel since ive had it an got about 170,180 miles out of it. not sure what mpg works out at tho
