Opt for the 1.9TDi (105bhp) engines. very economical and low runnings costs and aim for 5 doors with metallic paint. If you are looking at models between 05 to 06 reg you have the following choices......

    S

Base model, all have power steering, air conditioning (but earlier S models didn't!), front electric windows/electric door mirors but you won't have an alarm, alloy wheels, body coloured body strips and door mirrors.

    SE

Very similar in looks to the S spec but you do have air conditioning in all models together with alloys wheels and alarm. Other luxuries you will find will be rain sensitive wipers, electric door mirrors, cruise control and 'coming home' headlamps.

    SPORT

The SPORT spec has larger alloy wheels (16"), lowered SPORTS suspension, SPORT seats, six speed gearbox compared to the five speed for the S and SE models. Body coloured side strips and door mirrors. The 1.9 SPORT models are like gold dust with lower insurance group (Group 6) and band C road tax (£120 a year) compared to the 2.0 SPORT which is group 13 insurance and band D road tax (£145).

Also, don't rule out the the Golf Plus, it has bags of space and the new Mk 6 looks very similar to the current Mk5 with the same dashboard (which it shares with the Tiguan) and exterior (same rear lights and headlamps, etc).
Running costs are identical to the Golf but S spec have 90bhp engines.

All Golfs at this age suffer from faulty ABS control units so ask the dealer to replace it or else you will be faced with a £1500 bill if it is out of warranty. All 1.9TDi engines have belts which need replacing after 4 years.

Your welcome. Apparently it is a common fault according to my local dealership. VW should have raised a recall.... you will find alot of unhappy postings both on the Mk5 and Golf Plus forums on this very subject.

thanks again probably have the same problems as every other vw tdi..i have a vw sharan tdi mk2 03my self so i know that they are money pit cars...basically she is either buying a golf a3 or seat leon or 1 series bmw all diesel..so you all think the 105 is best buy as far as the golf mk5 goes..does the 105 have enough power as they are heavy cars, what are they like for limp mode my sharan 115 used to be terrible till i had it mapped...no more limp mode now for nearly a year..i cant believe that was never a callback as on the mway its very danderouse.thanks again ..ps,the more the merrier.

We have two 105 bhp VWs in our household... a Golf Plus and a Beetle. Both cars are very economical, with a recent trip to Wales last week my Golf Plus averaged 70mpg! But the usually average is at least 60mpg for my local runs. Neither engines are slugglish and living in a county with alot of hills both cars handle the slopes well in all weathers. The failure of the abs contol units only seems to target earlier Golfs, with the current reduced values of the used cars I would look at 56/07 Golf Matches as 'knt' suggests. Below is a 2007 Golf 1.9 TDi MATCH at the Abridge Loughton dealership which is very cheap for £8991......
