It's on the air intake pipe, right after the air filter. It will have cables gogle to it.

    Hope that helps

It is screwed onto the side of the Air Filter housing "lid".

It is basically a black plastic cylinder about 4" long and approx 2.5" diameter, with a large (5 or 6 pin) electrical connector sticking out of the top.

One end is attached to Air Filter box via two screws, and the large rubber hose going down to the Inlet Manifold is attached to the other end via a jubilee clip.

If you're thinking about checking it, just disconnect the electrical connector, then drive the car.

DO NOT DISCONNET THE AMM TO CHECK IT!

That is, not unless you have a fault code reader to clear the code afterwards. I get totally fed up with repeating myself over this!

Buy good quality rather than cheap - I have a pierburg MAF that seems to use aflat plate ratherthan the hot wire and so is less prone to corrosion. I have had it for a year or so now and it is great.

SNTEE - what brand did you get - for the benefit of others who might need to replace

That is a mechanical AFM (Air Flow Meter), not a MAF (Mass Air Flow)/AVM (Air Volume Meter)/AMM (Air Mass Meter) but usually they are made by Bosch, what car is it on?

passat - ATJ. It is just a slightly different technology to the hot wire anemometer type that are fitted as standard.
I have never had good experience with hot wire anemometers professionally - they are continually requiring re-calibration and the slightest pollution such as a finger touch throws them out. Hence I was surprised that they are used for this function in cars.
For that matter the MAF should be listed in the service schedule as a test and or service item in order to avoid these situations.

No brand indicated on either the part or the packaging I'm afraid......

And before everyone breaks their fingers in the rush to tell me....... I already know that it can be a false economy to buy cheap non geniune replacement parts.

However, on this occasion, I don't think anyone out there could give me a cast iron guarantee that the OEM part would last more than twice as long as the one I have, so I'll take the chance

Just on a general note Crasher, even if people do decide to buy geniune, going to the *********** should be a LAST RESORT. Their pricing policy is designed to make DIY maintenance less attractive.
There are other sources of more reasonably priced Genuine parts out there...........

    Oops! Soz everyone, rant over......

The Passat with an ATJ uses a hot film AVM (part number 028 906 461) just like everything else, I thought you meant the moving flap Air Flow Meter.

Rubbish, the DEALER price of a genuine AVM is only a few pounds more than from other sources, £67 on average including VAT. And another thing, if you were to buy a genuine part from an alternative source, would it come with a fully inclusive two year parts and labour warranty? The dealers do not try and discourage DIY repairs; in fact many that I know try and help DIY types.
