I know you guys have probably had this question a million times before, but please excuse this as this is only my second post on here.

I have a 1996 1.9 TDI 110 BHP A4 with 155,000 miles on the clock, FSH, and drives and looks like showroom condition. (Very lucky to have the pleasure of buying one in this condition).

It has just passed its MOT yesterday, only thing that needed doing was a new wiper blade.

Anyway, when i accelerate away the turbo kicks in quite smooth, i can go through the gears to 50-60 mph with no troubles, then all of a sudden the power just goes, I pressume the turbo is kicking out, and the only way i can get the turbo working again is if i pull over, stop the car, then restart it again. Clearing the memory on the ECU i pressume.

Any way ive had the boost control box replaced(I think thats what its called), and when i brought the car, they told me they had replaced the air mass meter, but i had my doubts from day one.

Would anyone say this sounds like an air mass meter problem, and also could anyone recommend where i can obtain a reconditioned unit from for a reasonable price?

Many Thanks (Sorry for boring you gys again)

    Andy.

Hi. I am no expert but my 115TDi (2001) was significantly dowm on power when i bought it a few weeks ago. I had the fault codes read and that didn't show anything. It turned out to be the airflow meter. problem solved. Have you had a diagnostic check done? That would be the first point of call i think. A good independent garage should have the right equipment to do this or you could pay a lot more and get an Audi dealer to do it.

Some other people on this forum know a lot more about these sort of things and if you ask nicely they may give you some more detailed advice. Good luck.

This is what is called "limp mode".
Probably caused by an over-boost condition.
You need to log the sensors when doing an acceleration run to do a proper analysis otherwise you can just throw parts at it.......
Find someone local with a VAGCOM who can help you out.
Do a search on any terms used here that are not familiar to you...

i have a audi A4 1.9TDI R-Regs and it dose the same as yours if i go over 2500 RPM the turbo cuts out i have to turn the engine off and restart it then ok up too 2500rpm, i have put a new air flow meter on cost me £100 but did not fix it and the part was non-returnable

It's probably going into limp mode because of an overboost condition.
This is unlikely to be caused by the MAF but by the boost control system.
Like I said earlier, invest £70 (1hour's garage labour) to buy a registered VAGCOM and cable and diagnose it properly, otherwise your p*****g in the wind.

Could be the maf sensor BUT spare 5 mins and try this.

i think it could be a burst pipe, happened to me about a fortnight ago. Look at your intercooler, follow the pipe thats coming out of it and going into the engine inlet manifold, this plastic pipe is connected to the engine manifold near the turbo via the aid of a rubber bit with 2 clamps on. Even though it might look ok from the top just trust me on this, take the clamps off and you will find that the pipe is cracked from the bottom.

Replace it and hopefully anjoy your car.
    My two cents

Hi wonder if anyone can help on here, i've got an A3 1.9TDi (2001) and recently it's lost it's punch when you put your foot down it just doesn't take off like it used to.

I've been told it could be the plugs that need changing, someone else mentioned that it could be the turbo thats gone, could this be the air flow meter ?

    Thanks in advance...
