That would add up then with the average labour rate being around £50 per hour plus the Vodka And Tonic and taking the book time off around 3 hours.

    Question.

Is this only prevalent on the 18T Engine? Or do I need to think along the lines of my 130 Tdi Passat needing doing? it has 110k on the clock and was previously a company car on long life servicing. I have the service history from dealers up to me purchasing it, and it's always been done on time.

I now change oil and filter every 5k and only use VW PD oil with genuine filters.

Only the 1.8T is prone to this and more so on longitudinal installation engines than on transverse, why that is I am not sure.

I believe the problem is due to different sump capacities on the transverse and longitudinally mounted engines. Oil capacitity less on the later.

Longitude 1.8t sumps are smaller because the sub-frame
    gets in the way.

Correct! Regular oil changes with decent oil is therefore a must.

this is probably why VW are so specific about the oil grade and spec to use - does using 505 or 507 negate the problem? my last Passat was a 1.8 non turbo, never had any problems in 130K. didn't use 505 but did use tripple R synthetic

The Longlife protocol uing 507-00 is a significant contributory factor in sludge build up, not the oil itself but the way it is used.

yea, makes sense. Never been too keen on the longlife thing, did the old 1.8 20V every 10K, will change my newer 130PD to that too, although it has been on longlife since new (73K now). For the sake of £50 extra every 10K miles seems a bit of a no brainer for peace of mind
