  1. Creaky clutch pedal...

I've recently bought a secondhand 1997 Golf Mk 3 1.6 with an AEE engine and 51k on the clock.

I've noticed that the clutch pedal is slightly stiff and that it creaks when the pedal travels up and down and is slightly stiff. The clutch doesn't slip and there's no problems with the biting point.

Any ideas what it could be? I had similar problems with my old 1995 Polo but never got around to fixing it as it went for scrap.

Am thinking it could either be the clutch mechanism or perhaps the pedal box - anyone have experience with a similar problem or know how much it would cost to get fixed?

That may just be the cable so do that first but the clutch pressure plates on the 085 box used in that model do go heavy and cause this problem.

Three possibilities, a noisy pedal bush, a tight cable or a failing clutch pressure plate. Does the clutch feel heavy? I would replace the cable and see if that makes a difference. Have someone press the pedal and listen to see if the noise is coming from the gearbox, if it is, the pressure plate has failed and you need a new clutch and possibly push rod guide sleeve and seal as well

I fixed mine with a little bit of WD40 on the clutch pedal mechanism.

Be extremely careful lubricating pedals, the lubricant can drip down on the pedal at an inopportune moment and cause your foot to slip.

Good point, but WD40 is only a liquid for a few moments until the solvent evaporates so shouldn't be a problem. WD40 = lubricant of the gods! (Ahem)

I swapped my cable and all was fine but a year later is creaking again. It's quite heavy, I guess, but not so much that it's immediately noticeable compared to hire cars (unlike the brakes).

My clutch, gearbox and engine are all on their way out though so a creaky clutch is the least of my worries! Will try WD40 myself though.
