    Hi,

Does anybody know if its a possible to convert a Mk3 Golf GTi 2.0 8v from manual to auto and if so from which car will the auto box have to come from - 1.8 or 2.0.

    Any advice would be appriciated.

Not sure of engine code although engine number is ADY033761. Year is 1995.

    The engine code is ADY.

You need a CFH, CNK, CNP, CLK, DKS, DLZ, or DNS code box plus all its mounting parts.

Engine wiring harness (the original only requires some very small changes so it depends on which you are most comfortable with).

    Gearbox wiring harness and ECU.

    Engine compartment wiring harness

    Interior wiring harness

The engine ECU can be very quickly recoded for auto box operation otherwise you will need the engine ECU, immobiliser and key chip (difficult to extract) from the donor vehicle.

    Driveshafts.

Gear shift system and consul trim

A small power steering clip to the body

    Engine backing plate

Flex plate and torque converter plus washers and new special flex plate bolts

Water transfer pipe and trans fluid cooler hoses

    Head side water outlet housing

    Radiator

    Front transaxle mount

Rear engine mount and block bracket

Brake pedal and some associated parts

Steering column lock (you will need to swap over your ignition barrel which means drilling both lock housings to extract the barrels)

Dash clock set (so the mileage will be wrong)

Fit a starter inhibit relay (this just plugs in)

And I am bound to have missed a few things, the above is just a quick run through. The only sensible way to do this would be to find a 2 Litre Vento from 95 to 98 with the ADY or AGG engine and swap everything over as required.

Well I would not have thrown my usual “never build a car you can buy” at you as you can’t buy an auto Golf 3 GTI. There were a few Golf 3 VR6 auto’s and if you can stomach the fuel consumption and higher running costs, these do make nice cruising cars that are easy to live with. I have worked on a few and I rather like them when I know I really shouldn’t.
