    Hi

I purchased a new Bora V5 manual in Dec 2004 and have travelled 59,000km's in it since, I love it

However, it does have a high end rattle in the engine under light load at around 2,000 - 2,500 rpm that is steadily getting worse. I have been asking the VW Sce dept to check at each service since 15,000km but they keep stating 'Unable to fault at time of test' despite me constantly complaining about it. I have even gone on test drives with mechanics and tried to demonstrate the noise (that I can hear quite clearly) all to no avail...

It is now getting very pronounced and I am concerned -

Does anyone know if this is a known problem with the V5 engine and if so, can they offer any advice as to what it is & what I can do about

    Thanks

Check the covers under the engine....

Battery, engine, air box ect.... often it's plastics making the racket!

    Good Luck

    Hi Nick

I have / will check again but I suspect it is an engine related issue, not a superficial item attached to it.

I'm showing my age but it sounds very much like an old fashioned tappet or cam follower type of noise, or even a noisy fuel injector pump etc. You cannot get it to appear when the vehicle is stationary free revving but it is easy to vary the pitch when travelling with light throttle and then disappear's completely if you accelerate harder.

Whilst it is obviously not a common fault I was hoping it may have been a known problem with some V5 engine's to help save on diagnosis costs now it is out of warranty (although I will be pointing out this has been a regular complaint since the 15,000km service...)

Thanks for the suggestion though, much appreciated

the noise you have may be a known fault on the early v5 engines they suffered from cam chains
you can receate noise when stationary but is difficult listen at back of engine where gearbox bolts on?
