Help, I've got a Mk4 03 plate GT TDI 150 with a tunit box and every morning since the temperature has been under 5degrees C I get the following sequence of warnings on my dash.

    A loud beep....STOP in large friendly letters........check coolant.......service manual.

First time it happened I did what it said and levels in the expansion tank were fine. Taken it to a local garage and they said it was fine and was just a fact of life in the cold weather!

The thing is if I turn the car off and on again a couple of times it clears it and its fine. I don't know if its linked to the temperature beep that occurs below 4 degees C to let you know ice is forming as this seems to have stoped working as well.

I could take it to the main dealer to get it sorted but they always find something else more serious and expensive to do as soon as they get their hands on my car so any help would be appreciated.

I have this exact same issue in my petrol Passat.

I've got a new coolant header tank to fit as I've tracked it down the sensor being faulty. It's a royal pain in the backside having the message pop up, but it's too cold to go out and door the work

If the levels are fine - I'd guess you have a similar issue with your coolant level sensor, which is part of the header tank - a new tank will solve the issue, but you may want to just check the plug (on the base of the header tank) first.

EDIT: And do try what kite has said. If mine turns out to be that, I'm going to be launching my new header tank at my garage wall

Thanks for that I'll have a look at the connection tonight or in the spring when it gets a bit warmer!! Where did you get your tank from, online or local? I knew i didn't have to just live with it.

I've "just lived with it" for a few months now, still does my head in every time I drive it though.

I got my tank from the sadly defunct VAGParts. The dealers are getting fairly good on prices at the moment, I'd give your local one a try.

Had a good look on the forum and it seems to be a common problem, not tried to sort it last night as was too cold but will look this weekend. In the meantime my car is now having a problem with the boot, keeps constantly flashing and beeping that the luggage compartment is open. Checked it and its shut properly but there's alot of water in the seal so perhaps shorting the sender out? Also the alarm keeps going off which is presumable to do with the boot, any ideas? I'm going to post this as a seperate thread as well.

€ vs £ went South and sadly they couldn't offer the same level of price breaks as before.

It was touched on in this post here

My views are still the same
