I have a 2003 GTTDI 150 and was just wondering which oil is the best to use in it the PD5-40 or the Long Life 5-30 both from the VW main dealer. The reason im asking is cos i have been told if you change your oil every 6000 miles the 5-40 is fine but if you leave it for long intervels then the 5-30 is best.I know about the long life service schedule and the normal schedule but i just want to know which is the best oil for the 150 engine.
    Cheers

    Agreed.

I do mine every 5k though with standard PD spec oil (not long life) as it's easier to keep track of when.

Think about this another way. Whilst the oil may still be within specification and will do no harm to the engine bottom end, the delicate turbo bearings cam lobes could suffer as a result of all that scratchy soot being held in suspension within the oil. This is obviously exasberated the longer the oil remians in the car. Longlife oil left in for the stated longlife periods therefore in my opinion is a big no-no.

You may well pick up by reading other threads and posts on here that Crasher (top dog here even though he is in fact a cat) recommends as a compromise that long life be used up to 10k intervals if you need to pay for someone to service your car.

The 150's are more prone to expensive engine problems than the 130. Crasher advises that you should use VW's Quantum Longlife 3 in the 150's and change it every 6000 miles. This has (so far!) resulted in none of the engine problems apperaing in his customers 150's.

(Apologies now if having said that causes the first failure to arrive with Crasher!!)
