I'm sorry that this is on the Sharan page but I have not had much luck on the Alhambra page and they are sisters. I have an 05 Alhambra that has a couple of heater problems. The aux heater is not firing up and the vehicles temp will not get above 70 degrees. After reading a couple of the threads on the Sharan I assume that the rear aux heaters problems are due to the glow plug requiring replacement. Is this something that can be done at home on the drive and how simple is it?
2nd problem, the heated rear window wasn't working I looked for the fuse but couldn't find it in the dash. I curiously removed the trim around the rear window and to my horror both the wires to the window had melted, has any one got a clue as to what has caused this and where's the bloody fuse / relay?

there is probable a break in the rubber gaiter the the wires run through from the body to the hatch ,very common, yours have probable touched & burnt out have to be replaced, the heater problem,if the glow plugs gone you will have white smoke syndrome,or maybe more as you said loads on here about this i have a 2003 mine just doesnt work at all now the pipes all get hot but thats about it,sensors checked harness fuses still no joy but mine hits running temp in about 15 mins in this weather have you any water loss, have a look on the ford galaxy owners site tech section loads on there even with photos and yes you can do it yourself...

I checked the wires through the gaiter their fine. I renewed them to the element and they work fine BUT they still get warm and are very flexible. Should the switch automatically shut off after a certain length of time as this doesn't seem to happen?
I've checked the fgoc site and am awaiting some replies

Hi You will need a fault code read to determine, what is wrong with the auxillary heater. To replace the glow plug, you must remove the complete unit

I've plugged a VAGCOM into it tonight and it read 5 faults; 01409 - repeated flame out & 01407 - Flame extinguished. I cleared these switched everything off and restarted, within seconds the heater fired up, it didn't really smoke but you could certainly hear the jet noise and you could smell it. It ran for about 3 / 4 mins then shut down. I checked the VAGCOM again and it showed 01407 - Flame extinguished. This has now got me beaten. I appriciate it could be one of 2 things; the fuel meter ( in front of the tank) and the glow plug, which would you go for or would you just change both?

my self i would go with the glow plug the reason being sounds like the unit is flooding thats why you get the smell as well as flame out...probably cheaper as well...but then it could be the fuel meter in which it my be giving or not too much-less fuel thats why you are getting flame out.. if you can or have elsawin check out the fuel meter measuring block & run it then you will see if its more or less...especially while you have the vag com...if not elimination go for the glow plug first...my opinion could be wrong...

Hi I do not think it is the glow plug fault code 01409
    Repeated flame interruption
    Restricted exhaust and/or combustion air
Check supply of combustion air and exhaust system, clean and blow through with compressed air if necessary
Quantity of fuel supplied not OK.
    Check fuel pipes for damage
    Check quantity of fuel delivered
Vanes of combustion air blower blocked, binding

    Hi,
I have a dead Aux heater in a 04 Sharan. Dismantled last night. Glow plug suspected initially. I removed and checked its resistance - about 1 ohm It takes about 9 amps off a 8volt supply and I took that as being fine. In my case I suspect the regulator circuit to be the problem. but I could well be wroung. If you have an ohm meter you could check the prob like I did though. Hope that helps.Tommyg
