Your main problem is the flimsy door card that the speakers are bolted to and the feeble 2 x 20w driving them from the HU. The standard front components on the A3 are 4" units with 1" tweeters. You can move up to 5.25" components but they need to be slim (52mm depth or less), and I doubt they will sound much better. You will need adapter rings to install anything in the front.
The best upgrade you can do in the A3 is to upgrade the tupperware sub. This makes a phenomenal difference as not only do you get proper bass but can also turn the bass down going to the cabin speakers which helps a lot on the quality coming from them.

I have fitted them to my Passat and there is nothing like them!
You can use them as coaxal or component.

The price on their website is £139 for the pair but go to their own eBay store and they are only £45!

I've had Focal components for several years and I'm very happy. I'm sure you can buy speakers that sound good at much lower cost. imho, paper cones sound best - avoid plastic cones.

Nice decent after market speakers always sound better the stock. I had a set of Rainbows. Cost an arm and a leg but well worth the mids, treble and tweeters.
