I have an A4 Cabriolet 1.8T 54 plate on 52K miles. I currently have 2 issues that I need help with...anyone out there!?

    1. I had a warning symbol flash-up 10 days ago stating oil pressure. I slowed down (as I was going fast) the warning light went off and has never returned!

    2. Recently I have had a problem with engine noise on start up, unlike before when start-up was pretty quiet. After 30 seconds the noise passes and tone is reduced. I have a friend who's said it's due to cold weather, but I bought this can in Jan 08 and it was quiet then.

Are these problems linked, as they've started around the same time?

    Whoever answers this....thanks in advance.

Is it a knocking on startup? They could be related, it might be worth taking it to a garage to check. If there is an oil pressure issue it could cost a lot to put right if left.

if youve got low oil pressure it might mean that after its left for a while all the oil drains in to the sump and when you start it up its taking a while to get the oil back up to the head so that would make more of a noise and do damage, best to get to a garage asap!!hope this helps

Stop driving the car, the oil pump pick up gauze in the sump is blocked. If you continue driving it, the engine and turbo will fail, this is an extremely common problem on the 1.8T engine, especially those in the longitudinal install position such as the A4, A6 and Passat. The sump will have to come off which means dropping the subframe down.

Doing my usual flick through I didn't even notice it was a 1.8T, not good.

If it's developed a knock the bottom end may have been damaged already.

Thanks for your replies....however getting a little nervy about the issue...no money, credit crunch etc.
You all answered about a knocking sound, there's no knocking, if so very faint, its more of a wineing sound for 10 seconds. Someone said it's the pump kicking in and is noisier in winter.

I have to say though, i have to wait a few moments for the car to warm up, as it seems very sluggish if I set straight off...again this is a new thing just happened.

Also, it doesn't happen when warm, so if I took it to a garage now, it's very difficult to spot the issue

Do I have to take it to a Audi dealer, or could anyone sort it? If it is as bad as you're all saying, what cost do you think I'm looking at?!

    Thanks guys

Any decent garage can drop the subframe and then the sump. At the very least you should have an engine flush and oil change as this sometimes holds back the problem for a while BUT flushing can actually cause more debris to become detached from the internals of the engine and so make the problem worse. If you leave it, it WILL write off the engine and the turbo and that is at least £1K of work even using second hand parts at the cheapest garage you can find. To fix it properly using all new genuine parts can cost in excess of £6K. The supply of second hand 1.8T engines is very limited, it is a rare car compared to other models and the demand is huge as this is such a common problem.

This thing about the credit crunch and you having no money, I hear this a lot. Why have the current problems affected your financial position? Have you lost your job? Did you have any more money this time last year?
