My Car is about due for service. I always do my own cars as I tend to keep them Until service history is worthless. I own an 04 1.9TDi. From the service book it says longlife oil has been used. I dont mind serviceing the car twice a year. What kind and grade of oil should I use. Ive never owned a Turbo Diesel before.

You have to use VW spec oil, if you don't it can cause big problems on the diesel models. Castrol Edge is one of the best, it's worth paying the money.

You need an oil that is to VW standard 505.01 for fixed 10,000 mile service or 506.01 if you want to do longlife services. The only problem you might have is resetting the longlife service indicator.

I checked out the castrol edge stuff. I was always under the impression deisel engines need special oil but its just fully synthetic engine oil . Price is no problem since i wont be paying £100 quid for 2 hours labour. The reason I do my own serving is because I have freinds that work for main dealers. The reason you get charged 2 hours labour is because while your oil is draining they work on other cars. However you are charged labour from when they start on your car to when they finish. In my opinion thats a CON. My job involves electrical and mechanical engineering so im quite capable of doing the work myself and from experience i know that while the oil is draining I can be changing the air filter. Something main dealers dont seem able to do. No job is started till the last one is finished which pushes up labour costs. As for reseting the Service indicator i found how to do this In the handbook

Ive seen that I can get the Castrol Edge Oil for about 40 quid. Thats not bad since a friend of mine just had a service and the cost of the oil that the dealer charged was 60 quid. Thats some mark up before you even take labour into account! Adding to this dealers probably buy in bulk and get the oil much cheaper than 40 quid!

Give Matt Lewis a ring, I got 9L of Edge off him for £55 (make sure it's the diesel specific though, mine's a petrol car).

    His number is...

If its a 150, use the longlife 507 spec oil (eg VW's Quantum Longlife 3) BUT change it every 6000 miles!
150 GTI DIESEL - propper juice!!
