T4 2.4 Deisel engine tapping only when warm!!

I just purchased a 1998 2.4d 5 cyclinder t4 (have have a 1.9d non turbo for the past 2 years). It's got a tapping / ticking noise that seems to be baffling everybody. On cold start up it's not there at all but after a few minutes when the engines starts to get warm a metallic tapping noise appears and it's coming from around the vacuum pump area - my mechanic says he doesn't think it is the pump tho!. Please help as it's driving me nuts and is spoiling what would be a lovely van. Thanks

Hi To determine if it is the vacuum pump or not,pump the brake pedal,if it is the pump,then the noise usually stops.

Pumping the brake pedal doesn't seem to really make any difference i'm afraid - thanks for the advice. Looks like i will have to dig a little deeper (into my pocket that is!)

By all accounts this could be a sticking tappet problem on this model. Mine does the same, but not all the time. I believe it isn't a big problem, just live with it. I think there was a thread recently on this very problem. Perhaps some else can throw some light on it....

hi as above really mine used to do the same and it was diagnosed as a tappet, as yours would only do it when warm and not all the time i found that if i changed the oil it would go away for several months i dont think you have anything to worry about i just turned the radio up

if the van hasn`t had reg oil changes I think as the guys have said above is right,I would change the oil straight away,if that doent solve it,you could be looking at replacement lash adjusters/cam,if left you could end up with the adjuster seizing in the bore from all the pumiling and more of a bang than tap noise appearing.
The tapping if it is coming from cam area will be easily found by sticking a screwdriver on the cover and sticking the handle agaist your ear.
Better still lift off the cam cover and look for wear~it will be pretty obvious which adjuster is playing up.

Thanks for the advice, very much appreciate. I've changed the oil (using quality stuff) and it has made no difference. My local mechanic has had his stethascope (excuse the spelling) out and the rocker cover off but is still non the wiser. Surely if it was a tappet it would be noisy when warm and better when cold - not the other way round? Having said that the previous owner said it's been doing it for 2 years - so maybe i just turn the radio up!

I've got a 2.4D T4 that does the opposite to you ...very tappety when cold but kinda quietens a bit when its warm. I've put in a dose of Wynns Top End Hydraulic Thingie Cleaner and will change the oil after ~500 miles using Wynns Flushing Oil when I do it.

I read somewhere that if the noise is constant even when you rev it then it could be the brake servo.

Hi there im james. I have a passt sport tdi R reg which on cold start ups will tick for about 20 seconds then fade away. When the temperature is about 10c the engine will sound normal then the annoying ticking will come on after 10 or so seconds. When the engine is at 90c it sounds a bit chappy but not ticky. Any help would be great.

hello the way to find out if its the vac pump is to take the vac pump off and remove the pushrod out of the head, refit the pump and run the engine ,if the tapping has gone its the pump if not its probably a tappet
