    Hi Guys ,
my passat 1.9 tdi has recently started to behave only what can be described as "lumpy!" its idles ok but during normal driving the power dips slightly and will then return. Does anybody have any ideas?

Could it be glowplugs? need replacing.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Cheers,

Shouldent be the glow plugs , As far as I know they are only there to aid starting.

How does it behave under heavy load ?

i am kind of a newbie but i suggest:

    a) check your tyre pressure
    b) check your engine fuel input valves

Or it could just be the roads you are driving on

    ok Guys , further developments:

Now get whistling noise from drivers side of engine bay when hitting about 2k revs,
    Is my turbo gone?
    If so
is it safe to drive to my mechanics garage 30 miles from home?

    car has done 80K miles.

Just re-read your 1st post , and mine was recently doing the same thing , audi tried to sell me a turbo , but I decided to drain the fuel filter of any water that may have come to reside in there and dropped the plug loosing the seal , when I removed the filter in order to replace i found it to be full of gunk , replaced it and the cars been fine since.

My symptoms were a "pulsing" of the power (sounds like your discription) which was more prominant in the lower gears. And I also had 2 fault codes stored one related to injection timing (seems about right for fuel startvation, if theres no fuel to inject then its going to flag up innit ) and one related to required boost not being achieved ( again to me this sounds about right as if the fuel isnt injected it cant be turned into exhaust gas to spin up the turbo and provide boost )

I might be talking ****** but a fuel filter is under £20 and well worth a chance.

    edit

well the same minus the whine.

My car has developed same symptoms, slightly wining or whistling noise when slightly acselerate, power lumpy as well (most when its cold), could it be from diesel filter. I recently changed diesel filter (bosch), after reading last post, maybe filter was not fitted right?

Do you think if i use diesel treatment stuff (like millers diesel treatment), it will clean diesel filter?

I wouldent imagine so no , If the filter has caught loads of crud then its best to just change the filter. I think it would be hard to miss fit the diesel filter , if its screwed up tight and the plug in the bottom has its seel and is tight then its fitted proper i think. If it was loose I would imagine you would find a leak of fuel , or it would just suck air and fail to run at all (as mine did when I hadnt discovered the lost seel yet).

When you guys say "whistle" are you sure that isnt just the turbo spinning up ?

you need to replace the filter as it can't be cleaned. They can block up quickly if you are using poor quality fuel or bio diesel with crud and poissibly containing water too.
Mine cost about £8 I recall and took about 30mins to change

The whistling sound does indeed sound very like the turbo spinning up and so not to worry about

its definitely not turbo whistle, its sounds like something rusted spinning. The problem is it comes and goes. You can hardly hear noise but it appeals when i slightly accelerate and on second or third gear if i boost, i can feel sometimes power drops (lumpy on power).
For example today nearly all day car drove fine. It just drives me crazy, i showed to mechanic, he drove it, and said drives nice

i started using millers diesel treatment recently, it kinder improved mpg, i get now 160miles for £20 town driving only and short trips. About 3 weeks ago diesel filter has been changed with quality bosch one. The only thing i am in doubt, that i used diesel from old filter in new filter.

Checked with vag com - no faults found.
