VW Polo 1.4 Stiff Gear

Hi Guys, I previously owned a 1995 1.3 VW Polo, which I had used for 5 years with 165000 miles on the car, the bodywork was looking a bit tarty, and I stupidly decided to give it away to a relative. I have just "upgraded" to an R-REG (1998) 1.4, and here lies my problem, on my way to work today after less than 3 days of owning the car, the exhausts gave way, had to get a new cat and middle bit from the quickfit + rocker gasket at a cost of £286. The last owner has parked the car for the past year as I could tell from the last 2 MOTs........

My question is that the gear appears to be a bit stiff, compared to the one I have just given away, is this normal on 1.4 as opposed to my previous polo, or is there something else I should be worried about?

Could be all manner of things but the most likely is a low oil level in the box. Have you checked and topped it up?

Thanks very much for that...... sorry if I sound a bit dim, can I check the gearbox oil as I would check the engine oil, or is this something that requires tools etc?
