    Hi guys

could anyone help shed some light on a problem i have had for a while now

17746 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Open or Short to Plus
    P1338

this will come up and the engine mangement light comes on - it actually disapers then return a couple of days later..?

I am told that the fault code refers to "bank one".
I have a V6 2.4 A4 Avant (x-reg 2000) which has two banks i assume - how do you know which is bank one and which is bank two?

I have had a look at the hall sensor at the front of the engine block opposit side to the oil filling plug (looks ok), but find the second hall sensor difficult to access?

I would say the car run very well (as far as i can tell) - but could ther be a timing problem? or can it only be:
    1. Faulty hall sensor
    2. Faulty wire/plugs going from hall sensor to ecu
    3. Faulty Ecu

what can i do to "kill" this fault?

any suggestions would be greatly appriciated

in my experience the banks have been known as left or right looking from the flywheel end,but in this case i would hazard a guess at bank one being the "odd" cyls,1-3-5,and bank two being the "even"cyls,2,4,6.
no 1 cyl being in front of no 2?
i would say that fault 1 is possible, fault 2 is possible, but fault 3,ecu, highly unlikely. likewise a timing fault or you would have big probs starting,or running without smoke.
    just my opinion,
    regards,
    stewy.

Thanks stewy - I might try to swap the Hall sensors around and see if the fault moves to bank two - if so it must be the sensor - if not it is most likely the wire/conection - still not sure which is bank 1 though...

think that's the hall sensor diagram, not the engine.
looking from the side of the engine, look for the front most plug lead,or diesel injector pipe.
that will be number one cylinder, followed,on that same side by no3 then no5 cyl.
that will be no 1 bank.
the other bank will have 2-4-6.
    regards,
    stewy.
