Great forum for a novice like me, thanks all.

A quick question. I've got an A4 B7 with the 1.9 TDI engine that needs the cambelt changed.

I've been quoted 360 pounds inclusive for the job by an independent specialist.

It's looks OK to me, but what do you guys think?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response Joe. Wrong time of year in the middle of a financial crises to be paying over the odds!

    I'll book it in.

Make sure that price includes the water pump and full belt kit (tensioners etc). You say 'inclusive': does the inclusion include VAT.

Dont know whereabouts you are in the UK but have you looked on audicambelt.com? its a main dealer in the midlands and they're quoting under £300 but am not sure what this price includes.

I have just had mine replaced. Cam belt, all tensioners, water PP and all other Aux belts for £350. Seemed a fair price all my local (south coast) quotes were well in excess of £400. Not including water pp and aux belts.

This was at an audi approaved garage in Glasgow (Clyde bank), very good service, well recommended.

Thanks all for the advice. I'm local to Gloucester so not far from the Midlands, I'll have a look at that. 'All in' was inclusive of VAT. However I didn't know about the water pump and other bits so I'll go back and confirm that.

    Thanks again.

The timing belt kit should include a tensioner pulley, but won't include the water pump. This needs to be done at the same time. As the front will be off the car - get all auxilliary belts done too. Definately go for fixed price - saves arguing with the garage at pick-up when they hand you the bill.

Thanks for the advice everyone. All done, belts, water pump etc, for the sum of 338 quid including labour and VAT. One very happy man.

When I called to ask if the water pump was included the guy at the other end was almost offended that I would suggest that it might not include the w/p.

Hat suitably doffed of to Challenge Motor Co in Cheltenham
