Hi all, my 2.0 SE tdi is going for it's first MOT this weekend. I've done about 67,000miles, so it's out of warranty.

I wondered if there had been anybody who got a nasty surprise and had their car failed on anything major. Schoolboy errors like not having water in the windscreen washer, or bald tyres don't count!

Not a B6 I hasten to add, but I did need new front discs and pads last MOT @ 58k. Not unusual for that mileage though IMO.

Did the fronts fail due to corrosion? I'd expect approaching 100k out of front discs. Then again, depends what sort of miles you do I guess!

And how you do those miles. Motorway's will obviously be easier on them than town driving.

The main thing is to check the obvious,

Lights - do all the bulbs work
Tyres - enough tread and in good condition
    Wipers - in good nick
Brakes - Front and rear, pads and discs.
Engine - make sure it's warm when the test starts, i.e. not cold. Could be an idea to give it an Italian Tune-up, before you go, especially if you have a DPF.
Nothing to see here, move along..

That is, imo, a very important point. Our local test guy is about 3 kms away. When the Laguna's due I make a point of doing at least 15 kms on the way.....

I took my wife's Passat sport for it's first MOT last Friday and it failed on 1 of the rear tyres being excessively worn on the inside edge, the infamous saw toth problem I think.
It also got 2 advisory notices, 1 of the front brake pads was worn but not too badly and 1 of the front indicator bulbs was whitening and should be changed soon.

My pads were replaced at about that mileage, but nothing was said about the discs, so presumably they were OK - and that was a VW dealer, so they must have been in pretty good nick if they didn't replace them.

Because my car is a taxi it's had two MOTs, and both times one of the side lights have been failing intermittently in the few days running up to the test, but were OK when I took it in, but of course didn't work during the test.

The bulbs aren't easy to replace, but luckily their were mechanics with long fingers to hand.

After it happened the first time, I couldn't believe it when it the other side did exactly the same the next year!

First time round I had an advisory on a loose wheel arch lining - which could be heard rubbing on the wheel on full lock - but this was fixed under warranty.

Pleased to say car got through it's MOT fine at the weekend. I took it to a local garage in Lincolnshire that I've known for over 20 years, as I wanted someone I could trust to go over the car properly with an unprejudiced eye and without a hidden agenda of finding spurious reasons to do unnecessary work. (Cynical? Me?!)

It also gave me an opportunity to have a good look underneath the front end and look at all the guilty components from when I was trying to get the creaky front suspension sorted out. (The creak has never returned since the lower wish bone bushes were replaced with the new design.) Quatrelle - "Bonne chance" for when you translate this to your service dealer!
