Hey guys and girls. Are there any of you out there that have a fairly decent sound system in a mk2 with using the original speaker set up? ie 10cm in the front, 13cm in the door and the odd shapped 6x4 in the rear?
    Would be interested to know!

My Golf 2 has the small speakers in the dash but aftermarket ones I bought years ago and 6x4 aftermarket ones in the rear shelf sides and my wife’s has the same set up. I have a pair of door bins with speakers grafted in and dash tweeters with crossovers I took out of one I scrapped a few months back if you are interested.

I had the 6x4 ones in the back until recently. I'd originally paid out about £40 for philips speakers which weren't much good, then replaced them with some cheapy ones (£5.99 buy it now on ebay) which were brilliant! think they were pyramid or something like that. I've still got the 10cm ones in the dash, and no matter how many different ones I've tried they're all crap although I've been told the jbl ones are ok.
    Hope this helps,
    Phil

I have JBL speakers in doors, in the front dash either side, and some good panasonic 6x4 in the back. Good dash mounted 'tweeters' and reasonable 'mid-range' speakers within the doors and back help. What I have also done is run a power feed and wiring to the boot and put a removeable subwoofer that is not a thudding piece of rubbish, but fills the bass out better. The whole lot I bought and fitted over 3 months of ebaying parts and it cost me a total of £120. It sounds 'true' and doesn't sound like a sound system banger.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Tom

go for a set of raibow or dls components for the front - they can be found on ebay cheap sometimes.

rainbow are about the same price as alpine etc but better quality (imo)

I competed in the professional class for IASCA for 8 years in my '88 16v GTi.
I used Polk tweeters for the stock dash holes and Polk 5.25" in the doors with tweeters to match. The cheesy OEM door speaker receptacles were replaced with custom 7" high, full door length panels for the doors.
A 6.5" center channel was placed in the lower front console area.
5.25" Polks in the rear deck with tweeters to match.
Kicker F-8 midbass were placed under the rear seat arm rests on 3/4" MDF panels. These were in parallel with the 6.5 inch Kicker Freeairs which resided in the back section of the door pods I made so the mid basses were very close together.
Two Kicker C-18's [in a folded horn array] filled out the bottom end.
Nakamichi EC200 and EC-200H active crossovers in the dash plus the Hifonics built in crossovers for a true 4-way system which sang to any tune.

It is hard to go wrong with Polk. They are super efficient which means you get more bang for your wattage buck over most brands.

200 hours of system design went into that 100% stealth system and vehicle. Anyone who heard it can testify. Imaging, staging and clarity were second to very very few.

    Wow. that sounds fantastic.
Would yoube able to point me in the direction of the actual polk speakers you used?

Just wondering only as our new golf wasn't even specced with a stereo, and the original blanking plate is still there. So i'm assuming the speakers wont work, or will be cr*p when it comes to fitting our stereo.
