All done (with the help of some Blu-Tak to avoid the screws disappearing in the dark!

The clips on the rear trim certainly grip hard -- and now I realise that they're not round the edge of the trim, they're somewhere nearer the middle (a couple nearer the top edge, i.e. near the rear window, and perhaps 4 nearer the bottom edge).

The washer clip had just popped off, and I've popped it back on again. £50 saved, thank you again!

Many thanks indeed to all for the very useful posts in this thread. The rear wash wipe in my daughters Polo Mk IV (Type 9N) stopped working with the wash fluid coming out from underneath the car. Turns out that washer fluid pipe connector had come apart down by the side of the ABS pump. A little fiddly to reconnect but after a minor re-routing of the pipe it was quite easily done. Without the input from folks on this forum I would have spent hours trying to hunt down the problem. Thanks again!

Thank you for this. Saved me a trip to the garage. Despite my hands being too big for the space, and despite the need for a 3rd hand to hold the light in the right place, I followed your instructions, and it worked well. I have also taken your tip to re-route the washer hose to the front of the ABS pump.
    Thank you.

If you look in the engine bay, down low on the bulkhead on the N/S you should see the ABS pump. The washer hose from the tailgate comes through the bulkhead just behind the ABS pump. The other end routes from the bottle up the inner wing and round behind the ABS pump from right to left. You should find the bottle end of the connection on the inner wing. I'd reroute the hose across the front of the pump. Removing the air filter box will make it a little easier to get at the hose (at least it does on the 1.2 engines).

    Hope that helps ya.

Mine was dripping out under the car too. If you remove the passenger side inner wheel arch the washer pump and connections are there to easily get at. Mine was the pump itself leaking but only £7 for a new one. Sorted

    Cheers - John

Hi all, this thread has been really useful. I found the rear screen washer tube disconnected near to the ABS pump exactly as described...

Only problem is that now it's dripping from the drain holes in front of the rear wheel arch. grr.

I'm hoping someone can describe how the washer pipe is routed and how to access the next junction, please? It's a 3-door model (Polo 9n, 2003).

Some people have asked for pics showing the connection point near the ABS pump - see below. This is with the airbox removed (which itself is easy). I used some plumbers PTFE tape (not shown) to make a good connection and then cable tied it to the ABS pump bracket. I'll add photos of the next junction if I can get to it!

This is the washer pump and reservoir accessed by removing the passenger side wheel arch plastic cover, didn't need to go there as the problem was as above.

Peel back the trim on the passenger side of the boot, below where the parcel shelf sits. There is a hose connection in there too, just like the one at the ABS pump.
The hose routes above a few electrical connectors in there, so check the connectors for signs of water ingress.
Once you've fixed that hose connection, you'll probably find water leaking out of the tailgate lock. If so, you'll need to remove the tailgate trim and resecure the hose at the wiper motor.

    Regards.

    Jim.

Thanks. I had read about Polos experiencing wet/damp footwells from leaking washer hose so was assuming that it meant removing some trim inside the passenger area. What you describe inside the boot doesn't sound too difficult, just need to empty out all my tools and tat to get access.

Hi thanks for these very helpful post pipe had popped out under the bonnet and behind the trim all reconnected now. However the fitting on the rear wiper motor seems to like backfire water from two holes either side of the black fitting into the car across the boot rather than the water going outside through the nozzle. Is this down to a blockage? Thanks again for the other posts again.

Could be the brass pipe that feeds the nozzle has seized. The nozzle should point in a single direction at the rear screen. If it moves with the arm motion then the pipe is probably snapped or split leaking water into the housing instead of out the nozzle.

I fitted a new (used) motor, dismantled it first and greased the outside of the brass tube to prevent it seizing. The mechanism is already packed with grease so it's just a matter of transferring some of that onto the tube.

Apparently there's a kit - Rear wiper jet spins with wiper. Anyone fixed it? - MkIV (Mk4) Golf & Bora - uk-mkivs - although I replaced the whole motor with a used part from a breakers.

Beware that 6n/9n are NOT the same fitting although look identical.
