engine smoke, golf 1.6se and not starting 1st time

Hi,

Ive got a 1999 golf 1.6se which seems to have problems starting 1st time most of the time. Usually I need to turn the key several times before it starts. And once I had smoke coming from the engine while starting.... Car does seem to driving a bit rough.. At idle the revs are jus over one.
Has had a new battery, alternator and starter motor, so I dont think its anything electrical.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a fuel injection issue or valve timing maybe?
Has your fuel economy dropped?
You getting any warning lights etc?

no warning lights.
fuel economy varies... sometimes around town im getting 22/23mpg and sometimes i'm getting 28/29mpg... But on the motorway its not bad I get around 35/36mpg.
Is this right?

MPG sounds about right
When was the last service done?

Last service was done at kwik fit, but not to sure if this was done properly. Do you think a service maybe the answer?

what colour is the smoke? is the car loosing any oil? have kwikfit overfilled it?
