my a4 tdi is doing strange things, the temp guage has decided to work, then move up/down slightly, then randomly drop. When it's working temp seems ok which leads me to thing it's a faulty sender or loose wire.

Do you folks know where the sender is on these things?

    Many thanks

    L.

think on the 1.9s its somewhere below the air filter assembly. it will be a green coloured sensor protruding from one of the larger diameter coolant pipes

Ah brilliant thanks, I'll check this out today.

As soon as I can work out how to get the airfilter out. Mines at 45 degree angle an there's 2 bolts at the bottom, there's no way I can get my hand in to undo them!

Temp sender is worth it for a start. It's pretty quick job and it's no where near the air filter assembly. It's at the back if the engine accessable from the offside. You will see the connector with 4 wires coming from it. There is a comprehensive thread on here somehwere with how to remove it.

Failing that it could be the temp gauge itself that is faulty, mine was. I had to solder some dry joints.

thanks for the help, found the sensor 4 wires. Removed the plug cleaned pins and put plug back on to try that first.

Now guage doesn't seem to be working and now turbo doesn't kick in!!!

Any ideas could a coolant sensor cause the turbo to stop working?

    Car is really slow now!

Ok turned ignition off then back on turbos working now. However seems very slow the car between 10000 and 20000 rpm. It feels like its dragging lile the brakes are on. Might be me but the turbo feels like its kicking in late at nearly 30000 rpm.

Just wonder if ive knocked something when going after the water sensor?

answering my own posts here I know but incase anyone else gets this. Car was really slow, turbo came in late, under heavy load turbo stopped working. Turbo also smelt a bit and whistled louder than normal. What id done was....

When putting my hands in to get to the temp sensor i knocked out a small hard plastic pipe. The pipe attatches to a bigger pipe which seemd to run through the bulkhead to the brake cylinder. If you look under the big turbo hose (standing at the drivers side wing) you can see this thin pipe. Not sure what it is but i think its a vacuum pipe to the turbo.

Shoved it back in an wooosh were motoring again!
