So, my new 2004 Passat tdi, UK model, jusy displayed a warning in German on the dashboard, in the centre bit where the Trip Computer usually displays.

Each time it comes on, it stays there throughout the journey, disabling the functions of the computer.

What does it mean and how can I sort it please? Any bi-linguals out there?

Here it is: ZEILFUEHRUNG NICHT AKTIV

Now I know enough to say confidently that something is not active , but is it something that's gonna kill me or the car?

Yes, I'm sure of the spelling, i photo'd it and I've just checked the photo.

If it is indeed mean "Management" I guess it's a problem, though there are apparently no fault coded listed according to the garage who just fitted a cam belt (Message was displayed before and since they have been working on it) though the mechanic saw the message when he stalled it coming off the ramps.

It's a random-appearing thing and so aint there all the time but when it comes up, it stays until you switch off & back on again.

    As the great Toyah would say . . . . . it'th a mythtery

I means Destination (target-tour) not active.
    Do you have sat nav?
I take it your instrument cluster is a full FIS in the middle and not half-height matrix?
If you don't have sat nav, then the instrument cluster is incorrectly coded (well I suppose it is anyway if it's in German).

Yep, I've got the MFD Sat Nav Unit. The car is a B5.5 and it is a full height matrix (That shows the radio station at the top)

It displays in English with everything else and miles not K's

Does this make your diagnosis any easier?

With a slight spelling correction it translates as Aim Management not active, sounds like ESP or steering angle encoder fault.
Why is it in German, check the cluster coding, sounds like Va.T.cho has altered it to a German setting!
