hi there 1998 19tdi 110 se (not pd) i started with "poorly engine" and then "vag com confused" thanks for your guidance so far , i am now thinking after the vag com checks were looked at - could the T belt jump a tooth at the crankshaft end - IP sprocket sheer the key and slip on the shaft- the T belt kit replaced a year ago and only 2500 mls also it has auto box and timing marks are hard to see and i have read that they should be on left side of the inspection hole - any good ideas and previous experience much appreciated car been down a week already thanks mike

Hi If the timing belt had jumped one tooth at the cranck ,then, the pistons would have hit the valves,(this you would hear) and most likely, your engine would be buggered. However what happens on these engines,is that the crankshaft sprocket can loosen on the cranckshaft, which in turn will throw out the pump timing. You will need to remove the sprocket to check the the locking notch on the sprocket and the groove on the cranckshaft.
