I've had my Golf for a couple of weeks now and as the weather has warmed up a little, I've occasionally driven it with the window open.

I've noticed that there seems to be quite a lot of what I would describe as high pitched induction whistle when the turbo kicks in and what sounds like a dump valve hissing to me when I let my foot off the gas whilst the turbo is spinning.

It's less noticeable when the car is driven harder and seems to be louder and more noticeable when I short shift and acclerate in 2nd and 3rd.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal for this type of engine (its a TDI PD by the way) THe car is ex Lex Vehicle Leasing so I'm assuming it is factory standard and it drives beautifully!

Am I being paranoid that something is about to go pop or is it normal
You own a Boxter - makes you wish you'd worked a bit harder and could afford a 911....

assuming this is 'normal' for cars, (the dump valve noise) i have the same sound. you tend to notice it more if your accelerating faster and making quicker changes. i think its something to do with the wastegate, but im not %100 sure. its perfectly normal though!

as for the whistle, id be worried if it didnt, this is perfectly normal for a turbo to whistle, the harder you push, the more youll hear it

Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

The reason I asked is that I've come from driving an Alfa 159 and you don't hear anything at all when the turbo spools up.

I must admit, I do love the noise though
