Mk IV Golf not starting

My Golf, a 2004 MKIV 1.9 TDI 130 will not start. It started running rough intermittantly over the last few days where when driving it would cut out for a few seconds but would always start again. I thought the problem was the fuel filter because it was not changed at the last service so I changed it. Now it will not start at all. Any ideas anyone??

Hi Did you fill the filter with diesel before you fitted it?

I am fairly sure that it is a fuel problem, and suspect the tandem fuel pump. Is there a test point where I can check the fuel pressure? And what should this be?

Any help or ideas from anyone would be a great help.

Not for a start but I have now. Since then I can get it to start and run for maybe 10 seconds then it stops.

Hi The tandem pump pressure is min 7.5 bar at 4000rpm,There is a plug (alen key)which you must remove.It is of coarse hard to get a reading when you can not start the vehicle.I think i have obtained a pressure from the tandem pump of around 4-5 bar just by turning the engine by the starter.Are you sure it is still not air in the system?When you have removed the plug you can at least see if the fuel pump is delivering to the tandem pump.

I will try testing the pressure in the morning.
I do not think that it is air locked as I had it revving at 3500RPM for about 10 seconds on more than one occassion. That should have clearded out any air?
Is this allen screw on the tandem pump? Also is there an electric pump in the tank?
