    Hello

A friend of mine has a v plate cabrio 2.6 (ABC?). The temperature gauge is erratic. Sometimes it doesn't work at all, others it will work but I'm not convinced it's telling the truth even when it is 'working'

The gauge unit itself has been changed and the fault remains. My initial thought is that the sensor is faulty but he tells me there are two. Does anybody know which sensor controls the gauge? Also any general thoughts on the problem would be appreciated.

The engine starts and runs as it should.

    Many thanks.

thatll be a dry joint on the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument panel. remove dash panel, then remove the circuit board. theres a regulator on one side. resolder the 3 pins and all should be well.

Many thanks for that. I did a quick search and most people tend to suggest that a fault with the voltage regulator would affect the fuel gauge and the temperature gauge.

Is it still a possibility given that the fuel gauge appears to work as it should?

    Thanks again.

well all i can say is that i did it to my 94 coupe and it fixed the temp guage that sometimes worked but when it did it only went to 50. the fuel guage was fine before and is still fine. i did touch up some other suspect dry joints as well, but the voltage reg was a definite dry joint. both guages do work off the regulator,so you would expect both to be affected, but you know audis. maybe the fuel guage isnt as sensitive? it took me a couple of hours to do.you can only try it, as if you do it yourself, and you have a soldering iron etc it will cost nowt.

    Thanks again zollaf.

As you say, it won't cost anything so I'll give it a go!

    Cheers

My 99 2.6 did exactly the same thing, it was just a bad contact on the terminals. Took the nuts off the back, quick dab of wd40 and it's worked fine since.
