Hi, I have replaced the cam belt and pump belt on my 2002 2.5Tdi transporter and i don't think the pump timing is quite right now because it is difficult to start when cold. I found it very difficult to find any timing marks on the fly wheel to confirm i'm on TDC. Could anyone give me any ideas about what the marks should look like? The only ones I can see are two notches close together that don't seem to be on TDC.
    Thanks Mat

hi the marks on the fuel pump are only a ruff guidence mark so you know that the pump is not 180 degrees out you have to put a dti guage into the end on the pump and set it up that way.

    Thanks for that.
I have got the correct tool now for the pump setup using a dti gauge. The problem I have is there doesn't seem to be any clear tdc marks on either the flywheel or the crank pulley to give me a good starting point.

when the timing mark is lined up on the crank with the mark on the bell housing and you have locked the camshaft with the tool it will be tdc on cylinder 1

I remember from my T4 that the TDC mark is quite hard to spot. I think it was a pointer on the bell housing and what looks like a saw cut on the flywheel. You need to get a decent light on it and you can only see it from an odd angle because of all of the stuff that's in the way. Also you really do need to get eveything spot on for it to run right on that engine, so you need to use the cam locking bar and the dial gauge, and you must release the cam sprocket before you tension the front belt.

I have got the map somewhere I could send you for the ACV engine (the one that you use with a diagnostic tool for getting the pump timing absolutely spot on) but I'm away for the next few weeks so I won't be able to get it for a while.

Ignore the crankshaft pulley marks they are wrong. (But just close enough to confuse you!) The flywheel marks will be there but they are really easy to miss.
