Does the cars onboard computer mileage display not reset as this is independent from the trip meter below the speedo?

The mileage goes up, it just wont reset to 0 ,usually just push button in and it resets to zero and you can see how many miles you have done

Have same problem, also on 02 golf, can't reset miliage. Also cannot reset service interval using methods described on this forum/handbook. The right hand button apears stiff? Presume its related.

I had the same problem and have found a relatively easy fix as follows:
    1) disconnect the battery and then adjust the steering column so it is in the lowest position, fully extended.
    2) pull out the plastic trim (attached to a piece of faux-leater) in the centre of the instrument panel.
    3) undo the 2 screws under the instrument panel (you will need a torx screwdriver bit). TIP - slide a piece of card underneath when removing to screws to avoid dropping them down inside the steering column.
    4) pull the instrument panel outwards, then rotate the plastic catches on the electrical connectors upwards to release the instrument panel.
    5) undo the 4 screws in the back of the instrument panel (another torx-bit required) and remove the instruments from the casing.
    6) pull the trip re-set stalk out of the instrument panel. under this there should be a very small L-shaped piece of plastic that may be broken, snap this out of the casing and discard.
    7) you should be able to see a small round black microswitch, this is the trip reset.
    8) take a square youghurt pot and cut a thin sliver of the stiffer plastic from around the top, about 12-15mm long.
    9) cut a tiny speck (1.5mm square) of plastic from the pot and attach to the underside of the plastic strip using superglue. The speck should be positioned so that when the strip is inserted horizontally into the instrument panel it hits the microswitch.
    10) put the trip-reset stalk back in potition and test - you should hear the click of the microswitch if it is working properly.
    11) reassemble as reverse of removal.
