    Hi Folks,

First time on this forum, hope I'm posting on the right section.
There is a strange smell coming from the Air conditioning/e con system when i turn it on. (Smells a bit like smelly socks) Any idea what is causing this and how I can fix it?

    All advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

Usually a smelly air con system is caused by bacteria / algae growing on the evaporator (which is the bit that gets cold in the back of the dashboard).

I have seen that a method of curing this is to buy a spray can of dettol disinfectant, remove the pollen filter, turn the aircon on and spray half a can of the dettol liberally into the aircon intake. This should kill the bacteria and leave your aircon with a pine fresh fragrance.

I've not used this method - I've never had mine smelling bad yet, but once a year, a bloke comes around our office and sprays stuff onto the evaporators of all our office air conditioners to kill off the bacteria.

    Hope this helps

If it is like my 2003 A6...

To the right hand side of the battery, underneath the black scuttle panel. Really easy to change. The new filter will probably be less than £10 from Audi.

Also spray sum dettol stuff down each of the blower vents, the proper stuff comes with a long flexi pipe similar to the wd40 pipe which allows u to insert down the window blower vents too, squirt it whilst pulling the tin back slowly to ensure all bacteria is sprayed also spray ur pollen filter too wi a little bit,
