Help Golf Mk3 1994 1.6 Petrol 8v (ABU engine code) with Bosch single point Mono Motronic fuel ingection system.

Problem : Always occurs after car warmed up say 10-15mins on daily basis. When take foot of gas can feel severe engine braking. When put foot back on gas theres a second lag and then the car shoots off. Worst in low gears at low speed. At time engine stalls altogether usually on roundabout as you approach them slowing down and clutch depressed. No engine management lights show up. One other thing Ive noticed about it is that if you blip throttle it always seems to dip to 850RPM and engine almost stalls before RPM then goes back up to 1000 RPM mark.

Reading lots of threads seems like common fault is throttle body getting dirty. I have used Slick 50 fuel system cleaner and additive for fuel and it has left the throttle body spotless when you peer in from the top. Has had no effect at all. Have also had diagnostic test which showed Hall sensor fault which is part of distributor. Have replaced distributor and cap with new VW part and has had no effect. Have replaced HT leads, spark plugs and air filter NO EFFECT.

Going to try and get another diagnostic to see if there are any other faults but garages dont seem to know what problem is and worried that could end up on a wild goose chase replacing part after part. Can anybody one point to any simple checks I can carry out to eliminate some of the possible causes. Would faulty earthing cause this or relays. Could it be caused by air leaking dowstream of throttle body. Could it be the idle switch. This one deserves a permanent guide as alot of people appear to be suffering and you can waste loads of money on it.

    Thanks

Have got very similar problems with my 1994 golf 1.6 cl. Have you found the answer yet.
    My problems are:
    • engine cutting out randomly - usually when I am coming up to a junction and moving down the gears or into neutral. Bit worried about this as could be nasty if happens on the motorway.
    • Every so often the acceleration goes on the car, even though I have my foot on the pedal. In 2 or 3 seconds it returns to normal.
I have since had the starter motor and throttle ignition positioner replaced. That has sorted out other problems but not yet those I mention above.

Any help would be most appreciated.

    i have this problem too.

replaced sparkplugs and was just about to go halfords and get a new distributor and enquire about HT leads.

    wondering whether to bother now!

    any joy?

just taken the vw to a diagnostics place.

**** all wrong according to the computer

so he reset the throttle gauge for me (think it was called that!) and cleanded inside a big wide pipe with a flap/valve in it that looked like it was connected to the air filter. He used some spray called carb n clean.

dunno if uve had that done but it appears to have sorted mine out (for now).

although he did say he was concerned about the fact that it was holding back when i put my foot down.

i will update tomorrow after i drive to work in it.

sounds like you had the above done????

Have been to some other threads that talk about cleaning pipes and parts of the engine and that sort of thing. Please keep us posted with how it goes.

I have now discovered that the car loses its acceleration at exactly the same point on my way to work and cuts at completely at the same point too. Bit of a conundrum that one.

Also, my dad has a vauxhall astra that was doing exactly the same thing as my car. Cutting out on slowing down and moving down gears to junctions. He had various things done and finally settled on looking at the exhaust gas recirculation valve. That sorted it for his car. Not sure if that will be the same for a golf. Need to do some more finding out...
